on these dvd players
All look pretty ugly to me! If you're looking for DivX playback then I'd go for the Pioneer DVD575. If you're looking for Ethernet and hard disks etc, then maybe look at the Kiss players (a bit pricey though).
they are the kiss players and yes i was looking for lan and hdd
I had (still have somewhere) a KiSS-450, an early model, and while it had great potential their inability to release stable, feature-full firmware ****** me off and eventually I abandoned it (the DivX/XVid support was never completely stabalised). However that was more than 18 months ago so things could have improved.
I guess you'd be looking at the 558. You may want to take a gander at their forums (if you've not been there yet) to get some idea of the current state of play with regards firmware updates, bugs etc.
Sorry if I sounded negative! I was aware that your link was to the Kiss players which is why I suggested that they are worth a look if you want HDD & LAN. I just think they look very ugly. They remind me of the original VHS players. Very big & bulky.
Another option might be thr Panasonic DMRE500H which has a 400gb HDD & LAN. Very pricey though at just under a grand? Or the Liteon LVW-5045 Which has 160gb HDD but i'm not too sure about LAN. A bit cheaper though at about £350
Why not update the firmware on it and check it out again. I've got the same model and have been very impressed with the images it produces and have compared them to many other dvd players including highly reviewed models and the Kiss often beats them. The only annoying thing I find is that using a VGA cable you can't play macrovision protected dvds so effectively I use the kiss for VCD/SVCD/XVID/DIVX and non macrovison dvds but have to use another dvd player for the 60% or so of dvds that have macrovision. However I often download a divx/xvid movie with AC3 sound and watch the film on my projector and 5.1 setup and its amazing.
One reason was I never got component out of it, couldn't find a cable I needed .. to be honest never found a decent description of WHAT I needed. Last firware I tried was 2.7.4 and I see it's not been updated in ages yet there seem to be many bugs still in the list, I guess they've moved on to newer machines likes the interminably-delayed 608 (or whatever its' code is).
