Had my eye on the HD 7970 to purchase on Monday, but seeing the performance figures against my GTX 580 I'm going to wait and see what Kepler has to offer.

Looking at getting one as I'm building a new system, noticed the mainboard I'm getting only supports PCI 2.0 don't know if I should be sending it back for a 3.0. The numbers on performance aren't so different now but I don't know if drivers will change that over the next few years?

I'm waiting on more info on the 7950 which I am hoping will be around £400 so that when I'm in a position to buy in February hopefully I can find one on special for £350, fingers crossed. My CPU, board, cooler and memory upgrade would have cost less!

From what I have read online the difference between PCIE 2.0 & 3.0 isn't worth taking into account as current GPU technology can't take advantage of the PCIE 3.0 BUS.

I know what you mean about the drivers, as they mature I am sure they will get more out of the card but the same is to be said of Kepler series cards, and having been in recent contact with Nvidia support for a 'BUG' I am impressed.

I think I may skip a new card this time round dependind on the Kepler release and buy next year when I renew my entire rig.

Take a look at this and you'll see current cards can't saturate the 2.0 PCIE:

tempted but going to see how much they cost. As has been said in many places I'm not sure the performance improvement over gtx580 will be enough to justify the cost. I also want one thats very quiet so an aftermarket cooler one might be better for me.

What's the difference in performance? Worth getting if I don't already have a gtx580?

Thanks for that. Looks very close performance wise. Might just leave it.

the 7970 is a fair bit more powerful than the GTX580, it is closer to the 590 in a lot of cases

If you don't mind opening the wallet for a small increase it's not, but for me I couldn't justify it as I game at 1920x1200 and it isn't a big enough gap for me.

    I'll see what Kepler offers
