Looking at the mx500 at $100
usa/canada postage is $ 7 to $15

but international shipping is $40
is this correct
seems a bit steep?

Yea, international shipping is quite expensive.
I ordered mx-500 december 2003 and got it in 6 days, delivered to Finland.
Good and very fast service.
But there are few resellers in UK too.
