...should watch Hellboy (R3 2 disc special edition...) and think again!! There are some absolutly amazing sound effects (chapter 23 - where Hellboy and the FBI director are standing on the bridge in Moscow with the pendulum swinging springs to mind...). Amazing bass extension and split surround effects.
Try and get a demo...and the only "D" in the surround format is in "D"olby "D"igital...

I've only listend to Gangs of New York in both DD and DTS. However, I am only listening through my hi-fi and could notice very little difference. I am wondering whether the distinction becomes more noticeable when I move to 5.1? Has anyone else found this? Army Bloke refers to bass extension and split surround effects, I guess this would not reveal itself when only listening in 2 channel mode.

    Cheers,

    Mark.

You won't hear any difference unless you have 5.1. When played through 2 speakers, DTS is quitier than DD for a start (my player can downconvert DTS to 2 channel for use on a TV scart).

Yeah, I noticed it was quieter. I was hoping I would notice more once I get 5.1 set-up because I was beginning to wonder what all the fuss was about! ;)

    Cheers,

    Mark.

Is there a dts soundtrack included on the disc for comparison?

I wish people would just admit that there are some films that have a better Dolby Digital soundtrack and some films that have a better Dts soundtrack

same here. Its a really old argument now. If a film had both on great i can make a choice. But if it was only Dolby Digital it does not bother me now.

I thought it was a good soundtrack however how on earth can you say Dolby Digital is as good as DTS on the strength of this soundtrack alone when there isn't a DTS comparison?

Having said that I would be surprised if there was a DTS soundtrack that it would sound marginally better at the very least.

That's what I was thinking. If there was a dts track there's a good chance it would kick the dd track's ass bigtime. But maybe we'll never know...

Its Columbia of course there will be a DTS edition ( can anyone say Superbit ) expect to see it next year sometime, Columbia love releasing multiple versions of the same movie but at least this time we were informed in advance of the 3 disc directors cut.

As for this debate, it can't really go anywhere as opinions are always going to be divided on this subject and ultimately it ends up a Dolby vs DTS thread.

You are missing half of the fun as you won't get the deep bass stuff that has been directed to the LFE channel. Wait til you upgrade :D

There are some people that still insist that the world is flat so not much chance with that one

This is exactly why I started this thread...to fish out dts fanboy statements like this. How can you say it would sound better when it dosen't even exist...

I have at least heard the DD track and can say that it kicks any dts soundtrack on a Hellboy disc that currently exists...and that includes pirate copies. :D

I was bored and fancied a fight so I thought I would say I thought DD was better than dts... Mustn't be done around here... :nono: :suicide:

I've just sat through watching the R1 copy of the movie and although the soundtrack is great, it is not the best Dolby Digital soundtrack I've heard. Even though there are plenty of moments where the LFE goes low, I thought that the LFE was a bit on the 'Hot' side. I was also dissapointed by the movie.

The fact of the matter is that the DD soundtrack from Hellboy is better than some DTS soundtracks that are out there just as there are some DTS soundtracks that are better than the Hellboy DD soundtrack i.e. Master and Commander, Gladiator, Blade II, Saving Private Ryan etc...

God, not ANOTHER DD Vs. DTS thread :boring:

I thought we'd conclusively proved neither formats are as good as stereo LPCM ;)
