Only happens on Pulp Fiction DVD. Every other DVD is fine??

Screen goes to 4:3 with massive borders top bottom and sides!! Can't do anything with it - really annoying!! makes it unwatchable - too small!

    Any ideas??

The manual does make mention of the fact that anything recorded 4:3 will be displayed as that but that doesn't help coz this is a 16:9 anamorphic DVD at 2.35:1 and obviously  a film!

    Weird

You probably have an old non-anamorphic DVD. Solution is to buy a new anamorphic version.

Best option is to buy a anamorphic version however you can change the settings on your player to 4/3 or letterbox. This will allow it to show the picture without the side borders. If your TV allows you to do so watch in the zoom mode. Don't forget to change your player back to anamorphic before you watch anything else.

    Cheers

It says anamorphic on the box? Hmmmm... I had exactly the same problem with 'Pulp Fiction' and I replaced it with the R1 Collectors Edition, problem solved. However, I'm pretty sure my old R2 version did not say that it was anamorphic. Unfortunately I gave it away so I cannot check and confirm this.:(

Cheers Brian - tried that with the player didn't make a toss of difference - and when TV is hooked up via HDMI it wont let me zoom - so knackered really!!

Anyway on the basis that you're all right...just bought two disc special edition (2002) for a fiver from Amazon......at that sort of money it's just not worth looking further....

God, DVd's are cheap these days - one day new HD DVD releases for a tenner from Asda???? .....may have to wait a while

but it'll be sooner than bluRay!!! :rotfl: :rotfl: Only playing!!:smashin:

If it is anamorphic your player's reading it wrong. I'd take it up with Toshiba. Apart from anything else your new copy might be from the same master with an extra disc thrown in.

My XE1 reads DVD-Rs as 4/3 and I suffer the same problem you had with Pulp Fiction. I adjust the ratio aspect and it outputs as normal. A bit of a pain though. My TV allows me to change aspect ratio through HDMI. I can't understand why some don't. I did read some where on these pages that it's part of the spec.

    All the best

Just use your Zoom function on your Tv to rest it back to it's original aspec ratio! Bit of a pain in the bum, but only takes a few seconds to put right.

You might try changing the HD DVD player's picture resolution setting to 480i and see if that outputs at widescreen. I've noticed that it's set higher you sometimes get a 4:3 output on some standard DVDs.

The R2 of Pulp Fiction has always been anamorphic even with the first release.

This is all down to the copyright control when using HDMI, it basically prevents the user manipulating the picture at HD resolutions,720 and 1080.

The only way to get round it is to switch to standard res, i.e 480/575 through HDMI or component and use the pic controls on your display.

I think the samsung players auto stretch/zoom any 4:3 material, which i personally hate, as we have lots of tv dvds, and i prefer to watch them as they where made, in 4:3 without any distortion. Although this can be a pain for non anamorphic dvds.

Any idea why there is this copyright control and how come some companies ignore it?

I couldn't agree more regarding 4/3. You should watch everything as it was meant to be seen.

Are you sure? I had the original R2 copy of 'Pulp Fiction' and when played via component from my DVD-S97 player it displayed as a non-anamorphic DVD would. As stated above I fixed this by buying the R1 Collectors edition. No other anamorphic DVD in my collection suffers from this, only non-anamorphic. The OP already stated that he was not having problems with his other anamorphic DVDs.

    I lied....

Double checked and I think my eyes are going!!!

The DVD does NOT say anamorphic - I must have looked at the wrong cover or something... sorry! and it is an R2 release......

Just to confirm it is the ONLY dvd I have that does this....apart from all the r1dvds that won't play!!!

Tried pan and scan again - and it worked  wouldn'y last night though!...- however looked crap! :rotfl: Still... just pulled my chair right up to the telly went back to 16:9 and clocked Uma that way!! :)

Anyhow Amazon copy on the way!!

Sidenote - reason this started - I am going through loads of old DVD's coz I am so chuffed with the upscaling of the E1 and for some reason the sound quality via HDMI seems so much better... just so pleased with this player!

and I've got a m87 46" on the way... man life is good!!!

    unlike the bank balance..

    Thanks for the input

I just checked. I made a error. The original R4 is anamorphic.

Sounds about right pj. I can say for sure that the original R1 DVD was non-anamorphic and given my personal experience with the R2 it is my belief that this too was non-anamorphic. I'm convinced your new purchase will confirm this. Let us know how you get on.:smashin:

    PS.
Okay nw, I had posted before your reply.;)

    Well done clever chaps!

Special Edition is fine - mind you doesn't say anamorphic on it either! :rotfl:

Does have DTS though - all good.

    Thanks

Ps. Anybody want to buy a non anamorphic version - one careful owner, never raced or rallied.
