IMO the Sony & Pioneer are regarded as the best. I've already got the Pioneer but will be getting the Sony soon as i need two tuners. The Pinoneer had optical out,i'm not sure on the Sony.............

I dont think the Sony has optical out. I had to choose between the Pioneer and the Sony, I went for the Pioneer because a) It has optical out and b) the rest of my stuff is Pioneer as well. However, I suspect the Sony probably has better picture quality. From the screenshots I've seen, the Sony has a much better programme guide and user interface.

    Cheers,
    Mat

The sony does have optical out. It takes the mini toslink adapter. Great digital sound, fantastic picture, fast menus and full support for the 7 day epg. It is also well supported by sony with frequent on-air software updates. No rf modulator if you need to send freeview to another TV but I highly recommend it.

Both will. Digital Optical lead from freeview box to one of your optical ins (I take you have some still unused) on your AMP. That's how mine is connected to my Marrantz AV amp. BTW Digital radio from the Sony sounds fantasic too
