i had a look at the apple site. the harman kardon soundsticks II look good they're £130 though. or what about the jbl creature II?

also shouldn't these things have an amp and batterys to power the sound from the ipod?

I've got some Creative travel speakers for use with my iPod and they take 4 batteries to power them. I don't know how these compare to others to be honest but they are acceptable for the odd occasion I would use them.

I think you may find that the JBL Creature and HK Soundsticks are far from portable. They are mains run and are more akin to 2.1 computer speakers.

I have the same Creative Travelsound speaker as John mentions and they are truely portable and I think the sound is great for what they are.

Having said that, I have heard the sound sticks being driven from a laptop and they did a fantastic job of filling the shop with good sounds.

Agreed, the Creative speakers are remarkable for the size  I just wouldn't rely on them for every day use - for that I plug it into the HiFi.
