    Hi All

I just got my SR4300 and have temporarily installed a rear centre speaker. I want to detrmine if it's worth the having this speaker in my setup as it loks pretty awful in my living room. So can anyone point me towards any scenes that will really show off ES/EX sound and convince that I need this extra speaker like Sadam needs a plastic surgeon

    Thanks

    Conor

The opening sequence from The Fast & The Furious in DTS ES Discrete 6.1 is great to show off 6.1's abilities.

Also the opening sequences - and infact most sequences - from Star Wars Episode II.

Dimmy, which DVD version of Fast & The Furious do you have?

The original, Turbo/Tricked Out and Superbit versions only have DTS 5.1 soundtracks. They don't even have DTS ES Matrix, let alone Discrete.

Or are you simply switching on your back channel(s) to reproduce the same signal as the surrounds?

Does anybody know of any good films that show off the rear channel?

    hmm - good point.

I don't have the DVD, I borrowed it off a mate ages ago & it sounded so good in 6.1 I assumed it was ES Discrete...

Must have been Matrix from a 5.1 disc!

Mission To Mars, Chapter 11: As the camera pans around the room the voice of mission control (Armin Muller-Stahl) slowly moves through the speakers by 270 degree (Front>Right>Right Surround>Rear Centre>Left Surround. This is also great do demonstrate what the rear centre channel does when you play the same scene without it and the voice 'jumps' from right surround to left surround.

    Cheers

If it's "atmosphere" you're after, then Se7en does a fine job of making use of the extra rear channel :)

I'd also highly recommend Blade 2 as suggested above :)

Gladiator - DTS ES Discrete - as he throws the sword at the guard on horseback after escaping from being executed. Sword comes from directly behind you.

The Haunting - DTS ES Discrete - loads of ambient effects etc throughout the film.

Fight Club - various ambient noises etc

Star Wars - The Phantom Menace - Pod Race as the pods come directly at the screen the panning effect comes straight at you, over head and then behind. Various other scenes, light sabre battles etc

xXx - in the opening scene there is a sniper gunshot which is rather interesting. ;)

Nearly all of these will show DD EX of to it's full potential.
For the dts es version, just hoick the rears and sub up by about 5db each...hey presto...dts...:D

Or you could go to www.dtstech.com and have a search there. They don't have a dedicated es page though, you have to download a pdf file and ther es ones are marked with an *...

Thanks for the replies and indeed yes the extra channel really does make a difference. But I think that you need a pretty long room to have a rear centre speaker. My room is only 14 feet long and I sit almost against the back wall. This means that the centre speaker is almost over my head which reduced it’s effectiveness greatly. Also I have my projector firing through a hole in the wall so I had to put the speaker slightly of centre. For these reasons I have decided to remove the speaker. Perhaps if I move to a bigger room in the future I can revisit Es/Ex.

    Thanks all

You could always try using 2 dipole speakers either side of your projector port, this would diffuse the sound somewhat which may alleviate the proximity problem you are having at the same time.

    Just a thought.
