It looks like Datel seem hopeful of releasing Freeloader on 2nd August, according to Play. Does anyone know if there are any snags about using this (hopefully) wonderful piece of software? I.e. warranty issues, playback problems. I know that PAL DVDs are supposed to have more lines, but is this an issue with games. Playing an NTSC signal (which I presume the GC would output if playing an import game) isn't a problem, but will my RGB cable still work?

    Thanks,

    Toby

I'm sure we'll find out in time. I think I will give it a little while before I buy anyway. Import games are very expensive and by the time freeloader, we'll be catching up with the rest of the world.

Yep - dvdboxoffice is probably slightly cheaper than buying from a uk store! (between 32 and 36 quid)
There are always some games that never come out here as well.
There will always, always be some titles that have huge delays between JPN/UK/US releases.

I have never brought from DVD box office. Any import charges? That's what really worries me. The postman turns up at the door with a crisp Resident Evil and won't hand it over until you pay him an extra £20. Nightmare scenario 'cos I don't keep cash in the house and would have to wait even longer:(

For some reason, dvdbo manage to avoid it. I think they eventually dispatch it from within europe which seems to get by it.

The only thing I would say is that with dvdbo you have to get in early on the pre-orders or not be too bothered about delays. To get these great prices they seem to be able to source stock in large numbers so there's often a delay while they wait for orders to build up.
Ss far my games have all shipped within 2 days of the release

And what's the latest on Freeloader? Last I heard, Nintendo had the hump 'cos it enabled you to play pirate games as well as import - which was the cause for all delays.

Hmm - not heard that one - surely anyone going to the trouble of making pirate mini-dvds could also get by the protection issue.
Either way - I'm not bothered I just want to be able to rent the odd game for my US GC

Would be great if there was somewhere here that rented US games. I'll probably buy freeloader anyway because I can't wait 2 months for RE!!

The only drawback I see with the freeloader is it will probably never come out.

If it does Nintendo will just add something in the code of a game to stop freeloader doing what ever it does to allow imports to run.

This is the reason why I recently sold my pal GC and now have a US/Jap machine and am currently playing Sega Soccer Slam and have Res Evil and Eternal Darkness in the post on there way to me.

You're in for a real treat with Eternal Darkness. The atmosphere of the game is brilliant and the "Insanity" effects are a sight to behold. Some bits are truely shocking - one bit in particular made me jump about 10 feet in the air ! It takes time to get in to though. The third chapter is when it really starts to draw you in. The best thing about Eternal Darkness though, is the music - it's awesome, especially through Dolby Pro Logic II.

Also, regarding the Freeloader, it has been confirmed that it works on all region Cubes, i.e, will allow an NTSC Cube to play PAL Games.

    :)

DVDBoxOffice are ace. I buy all my games and accessories from them (over a grand's worth of stuff now). International shipping is free and I have NEVER been hit by customs for any of their stuff. Eternal Darkness is ace BTW, especially in 16:9 progressive scan (slurp).

I am still unsure about the freeloader but we will see what happens?

My copy of Res Evil came today and I am gobsmacked at it.
The quality of the sound and graphics has blown me away I knew it was good but not this good.

I remember first playing this on my saturn and this updated GC version is superb.

If eternal darkness is as half as good as res evil I will be happy,
I have read some people think it is better.

    Any views on this;)

    Groundy

I know you are the guy in the know so can I ask you a question.
I currently use my GC with the jap official component cable,
I know all I am getting is a interlaced component picture(sadly no prog scan)but would I get a better picture with a modified RGB cable which you do I believe?

I just want the best picture with the gear I have.
    Toshiba 36ZP18 tv component input
Denon AVR 3802 amp 2 component inputs 1 output
    Mirage speakers.

Your opinion would be greatly received.:D

Thankyou for the kind words Fuzzy ;). You're currently getting the best possible picture from your Gamecube by using the Component Video Cable. The modded RGB Cable does give a true RGB signal which is great but generally speaking - and I'm sure you've heard this before - Component is considered the better of the two. This isn't gospel though and depends on how well the source and display device render both formats. Some Tv's are particularly poor at RGB and produce better results via S-Video.

I used to own the Tosh and while I had my issues with it, hooking the Gamecube up via Component Video to it is as good as it gets for interlaced displays. Progressive Scan does offer a slight improvment (via VGA into Loewe Aconda) but to gain the real benefits of Progressive Scan you need a much bigger display area such as Projection or even Plasma.

As for Eternal Darkness being better than Resi Evil, I don't think it quite manages it. Resident Evil is a franchise I've loved for years, ever since it came out on the PS1 and the Gamecube version is the best yet. Eternal Darkness might look similar but it plays a whole lot differently and is a great game in it's own right.

    :)
