Any point in replacing my amp?

I have had it running for about 6 years now and its given me good service so far (Its an HK AVR 5500).I am now wondering whether its worth me "upgrading" to one with the new HD sound formats. The only other advantage i can see is its use as an HDMI hub( my hK has no such inputs)Upconverting isnt an issue as my Panasonic PH10 plasma , which i had fully ISF calibrated, does a very good job of that itself.I also have strong suspicion that should I replace my HK, i would have to have the thing calibrated as well to go with the rest.Any ideas ?Thanks
I would prefer an amp that does fair fist of music as well.My HK does a fair fist of that

hi there
i have just upgraded to the sony str2400es for hdmi and new hd dound formats, i can only say in my opinion that it was a very good upgrade, the new hd sound formats are truly worth listening to , and the hdmi sound connection with good hdmi cables is very clear and detailed and better spaced...this may help a little, good luck in whatever you choose to do steeevo1....

Sony isnt too bright then?

I am in a similar quandary but don't really want to upgrade. I have resigned myself to a future purchase of a Blu-Ray player with internal decoder and 7.1 outs, which will be a workable solution.

I guess one day I will have to bite the bullet but not yet.:D

Hi LGS,judging by the picture of the back of the unit there is an 8 gang analogue input, you could keep the HK and buy a player with a 8 gang analogue output and you'd be sorted for the latest sound formats.

Basically no need to update your amp.

there is 6 and 8, but if want to go 7.1 i would have to add a power amp and the HK would then act as a processor, plus i would need another pair of speakers.Having said that my room is not large enough to warrant 7:1:),
At the moment the 6 analogue output is used to ouput DVD audio signal from an Oppo 981 DVDp( not that I use it much:rolleyes:).Now if there is a player that will process all the new digital audio signals and output in analogue together with DVDA, I'd be laughing.

my brother has the same amp as you , the sound from it through his ruark speakers is what i would say mind blowing , its amazing he runs a band for a living so the sound is set up perfect , all i can say that if new sound formats sound even better i would like to compare the two

if your going to upgrade let me know , ill be interested in that
