As part of a large scale gutting of our semi detached house, my Wife has agreed to let me upgrade all my home cinema kit...new amp, projector, screen etc etc.

One thing I want to do whilst we are having the living room re built is to have all the cables and wires hidden as best as possible. I am not sure which would be the best way to go about this though. Should I get some panels for the walls and have all the speaker wires plastered behind or would it be easier and better to simply build connection panels into the new skirting?

Does anyone have any tips, pictures and advice on doing this sort of thing and where to buy the panels from as in the past I have just hidden everything under the edge of the carpet  ....the new wood floor is going to make that a little difficult and the extra speakers and projector are going to create a few more metres of wires and probably make the Wife very unhappy

    Thanks in advance

Why not put it under the floor?

just doing my living room and am using hollow plastic skirting panel (available at all diy stores) I will be cutting small holes where cable needs to enter/exit. Also with a little prep can be painted but will be hidden by av unit etc. Probably not the best solution but the least messy

We have a concrete floor so I assume I would have to either cut small trenches into the concrete for the cables..dont fancy doing that to be honest.

Why not try plastic conduits in the walls then plaster over them?

Just remember to make the conduits big enough for changes in the future!!

If the wood floor is not glued to the concrete it will either be secret nailed onto batons which are fixed to the floor - which will give a space underneath or on glued/clicked together and floated on sound pads (big fibre panels - Wickes sell them) these could be easily cut to take a cable as they are quite thick.

I have been really lucky in that the builder that we chose to do a lot of work to the house is also into home cinema so he is also going to do a lot of the hidden wiring at the same time as fitting the skirting as well as fit the screen and pj.

I ended up dropping on the fluch connector panels for the speaker banana plugs in B&Q. They seem really good and do single and double (handy for my bi wired fronts) with gold plated connectors on at £5 and £7.

    Go here:

    http://www.audiovisiononline.co.uk/

then choose from the menu: LIGHTING

    then from the menu: ACCESSORIES

then from the main page: WIRETRACK SYSTEM

and you have 3 options of skirting and coving specifically designed for hiding cables and easily removable too :D

That stuff is brilliant Mad Andy. The guy fitting the skirting said he was going to use some special cable system that held it all in place and enabled the skirting to be removed to add more cables later if required...I reckon he must have meant that stuff. I am going to contact him to make sure as that really is great.

    Thanks for that

Well I have had no luck ordering the Wiretrack system from Audiovision

There site lists exactly the same item but with two different prices so I thought it would be best to confirm with them that it was a mistake and not that there were two seperate parts that I needed to order.

I first tried phoning them...got answerphone so left a message and contact details....nothing!

    So emailed.....nothing..

Tried phoning all day yesterday and got answerphone and left numerous messages...nothing!!

Finally got through on the phone today and spoke to someone.....who had no idea why there was two prices and didn't know if it referred to two different things....but someone there did...

...but he was on his lunch and would phone me straight back....

    ...guess what...

    Nothing!

Does anyone know anywhere else that sells the Wiretrack system as I have given up all hope with Audiovision :thumbsdow

We are going to get our garage converted to a "dining room"/"play room". Little does my wife know but this will also be a Home Cinema Paradise! :) This stuff sounds fantastic!

cleric, bear with me mate, the managing director posts on this site and coincidentally i had already asked him about the pricing which he has now changed on the two options, so ive sent him another pm asking him to check this post out and see if he can sort whatever you need out :)

Colster - I did that too, all plasterboarded, carpeted etc, unfortunately it turned into a full time playroom lol

Thank for all your help Andy

I just need to order 13 section of 5ft Wiretrack but need to know what the difference is between the the £8.95 item and £13.95 items that are listed on the Audiovision site as they both have exactly the same descriptions.

I hope this is sorted soon as I REALLY need to order this as it sounds perfect for what I want !

Hi Cleric, I think i got a bit confused, I thought the email was from the same person who pm's on here, so i answered via the PM system here rather then your email, the price difference is the length, it's now been amended on our site, it's £8.95 for the ft and 13.95 for the 8ft.

Hope this helps, also I do appologise for the lack of response or contact you got, we seem to be experiencing an overwhelming demand for our services at the moment which is really leaving us stretched, we hope to rectify this very soon.

This tracking system is brand new to the UK and as such we are the only UK importers of the product, and if you place and order you would be the first in the UK to use it, maybe you could review for us.

I have ordered 13 of the 5ft sections ...that should make things nice and easy as there is quite a bit of furniture around the edge of the wall so 5ft sections will just be right to remove should I need to get to the cables.

I can't wait to be honest...almost as excited about this stuff as I am getting all the screen and projector installed

Thanks again for all your help Andy :smashin:

Here is a pic of my LCD on my bedroom wall, all the cabling is inside conduit which is plastered over. My X-Box and DVD player are inside the corner cabinet with the Hi-fi on top.

    Hello Cleric

Did your wiretrack system arrive safelty, and have you had a chance to use any of it yet?. I'm thinking about some myself, but could do with konwing what its like to work with, mainly in regards to cutting to length. A photo of the final job in situ would also be great and much appreciated - the photo on the website is too far away and only shows the front panel removed.

    cheers

    I still havn't received it :(

I have PM'd ntslik who, and I have to agree with this, has said that it would take a little longer than usual due to it coming from the USA......but I am getting really desperate now as not having the wiretrack is holding the whole of the job up in our living room. The builders have almost finished the rest of the work through the house but can't start the plastering and decorating or flooring the in the living room until the Wiretrack is in...

...I hope it's not going to be long now or I may have nine angry builders coming at me with lump hammers as they aer working on a fixed payment agreement rather than by the hour

I wish they had as it would have made my job a lot easier :(

I will take pics of all the fitting when it does arrive and post on here along with my impressions of the Wiretracks system.

Well, it's official....the main contractor is now after my blood !

Everything they needed is either in place or has arrived ready to fit...except the Wiretrack :(

They are just about ready to walk off the job at the moment as they can't finish the plastering in the living room until it arrives.....I can't believe that some little strips of plastic is holding things up so much

Hi Cleric, I might have to advise you to look for an alternative, I don't want your builders causing any more issues, we currently can't get any contact from the manufacturer so we can't confirm any form of dates etc.

We are going to arrange to have the products taken off our website until we can establish contact, I know with the many home building and installation projects we do the most crucial advise we can give is to have as much time on your side, as with most specialist products, they often take time to arrive and builders are not at all a patient bunch.

Oh no :( I was really looking forward to getting the Wiretrack too as it looked perfect.

As I had put in a post further up, the builders were going to use a hidden cable system (most likely the stuff from the likes of B&Q) but were very impressed with the Wiretrack specs so agreed I was best going for that.

I will let them know to simply fit the stuff they were going to orgionally and hope they dont blow too many blood vessels (as you say, not a patient or understanding bunch) and end up taking my head off for wasting so much of their time !

    Thanks for trying.

I also hope my Wife dosn't explode when I tell here that we have been waiting for nothing. :( :(

No problem, just sorry we couldn't fullfil your order quicker, but thought it better to tell you now rather then keep you hanging on.

I will keep you posted if there is any short term developments
