any one seen the BTC DVD drive? (had spdif out)

Unfortunately there is no way to get 5.1 sound out of a dvd rom drive as the drive does not have a Dolby/DTS Decoder built into it. It really wouldn`t be much use for HTPC purposes,

That's still S/PDIF. It's just 0/5V signalling instead of +/-0.5V.

I was just wondering whether this drive something special in that respect (I am guessing no, it isn't). I'd recommend a Lite-On or Pioneer drive instead.

The digital out on drives can only carry 'red book' i.e. the linear PCM of an ordianry CD. For a DVD drive to have a worthwhile SP/DIF port, it would have to be able to extract the audio stream from the DVD, which thus far no drive can do.
