this DVD ROM drive from BTC (model: bdv316b) has got some good spec's and an spdif out, which could solve lots of sound problems. has anyone seen or used this?

Unfortunately there is no way to get 5.1 sound out of a dvd rom drive as the drive does not have a Dolby/DTS Decoder built into it. It really wouldn`t be much use for HTPC purposes,

Most CD/DVD drives have S/PDIF output.

Except it's not SP/DIF out, it's digital out at IIRC TTL level, dunno why drive manufacturers insist on calling it SP/DIF.

    That's still S/PDIF. It's just 0/5V signalling instead of +/-0.5V.

I was just wondering whether this drive something special in that respect (I am guessing no, it isn't). I'd recommend a Lite-On or Pioneer drive instead.

The digital out on drives can only carry 'red book' i.e. the linear PCM of an ordianry CD. For a DVD drive to have a worthwhile SP/DIF port, it would have to be able to extract the audio stream from the DVD, which thus far no drive can do.
