Just wondering when the "MCE" Media extenders are going to come to the UK.

I see Pinnacle and few others have brought out there own versions, but i want a proper MS(licensed) one.

I actually built a small MCE PC to go under the plasma, but it is still slightly too big. :suicide:

I see the new Xbox 360 can be used as a media extender, and i really fancy one of those.
Alas, they don't look like coming out any time soon.

So in the mean time, i thought of getting a MCE extender which i will then put in the bedroom once the Xbox 360 hits etc.

So, anybody have one (proper MCE one/Linksys etc)?
Or does anybody have any idea when they are due?

I Have just bought a modded xbox to use as an MCE extender. Have ordered the official MS kit from the US via Ebay. Excellent picture quality with the advanced scart cable. Also, can switch to the free xbox media center app which will play all media file types, that MS won't play such as Divx, Xvid and Vobs. Oh.... and you can play games!

    Hi Paul D
    A few comments

Please note that no competitor has managed to bring a device to the UK that will actually allow you to view "live" TV on thier media box. I am led to believe this is the main problem (mostly legal) for Microsoft releasing official MCEx here.

I really hope that Microsoft does not cripple this function on PAL XBOX360's due to the live TV issue....

You can import - but their are limitations such as connectivity and I am hearing about widescreen note being properly supported...

I hope they realease them tomorrow....but the lack of any real information or announcements means could mean trouble....

My brother has an imported linksys extender it supports 16:9 with no problems via composite it is a problem that they dont have the scart connection but component connection is superior to scart anyway. I am quite sure you can get a component to scart adaptor although I may be wrong on that one.
And I agree with Lisa G get an xbox for your extender they are awsome !
If your not fussed on the colour get a diffent case or spray the black one a different colour :)

I was thinking about using my xbox.
Are the official UK media extenders available for them?
I know about the unofficial software, but i don't want to mess around chipping it etc.

I use MyMovies on the main MCE server, and have stored my DVDs there.
I just want to be able to access them plus the normal MCE options plus My Weather/Napster plug ins etc.

The Napster plugin is working beautifully with MCE, and i want to be able to access it via the extender.
As far as i can tell, only the official extenders work with it.

I have also stored some Hi-Def movies(in WMV-HD and TS(mpeg) format), but i'm not sure the extenders can access them. Anybody know if this is possible?

I get the feeling i may as well wait for the Xbox 360...

Ps thanks for the responses so far!

The official extender software for the xbox is global mate just not released over here yet you get a dvd case with the software to install on your MCE PC then a dvd for your xbox a remote control and dongle you dont have to chip it to use this software just buy it from ebay.
If you want to use the unofficial XBMC software then you will need to either chip or modify the software on your xbox to use it.
With the official xbox extender software you can't play divx or xvid only mpeg1, mpeg2 or WMV. If you have a good enough network connection then I am sure you can stream the Hi def stuff with no problems.

It is an NTSC disc though, will that work on a non-chipped UK Xbox?

No NTSC makes no difference its only down to the region coding of the DVD which I am quite sure is 0 pushing an NTSC signal to your xbox will just make it convert the signal to PAL anyway as long as the disk has not got region 1 on it.

How exciting! I am really enjoying mine, just using xbmc at the moment but playing back video files is easy and good quality. My MCE extender kit is in transit, hoping it will arrive this week, no idea how easy it will be to set up. Also............. it plays games! Recommend Psychonauts - very entertaining :D

The extender kit arrives, set up in half an hour - and it works!!

PQ is very good for live tv, recorded tv and pictures.
Also handles My Music very well,
Shame that no file support for ripped DVD's or Divx/Xvid,
But I can switch back to xbmc for that,
And the remote works in all aspects of xbox and xbmc, which is very handy.

Lisa, i assume your xbox is chipped?

Did you have to turn the chip off to install the extender software?
Or do you just have to insert the extender disc etc.

My chipped box should be here in a few days.
The extender should be here weekend etc.

Do you have "my weather" on your MCE machine?
If so, does it then show on the extender menu?

I just hope Napster works via the extender etc

Yes, just purchased for this purpose from www.advancedxbox.com (great service)

Good point - I didn't think to do that, but it all installed ok anyway.

Hurrah - it's good, may as well get some games for it too..... :smashin:

This is the one program that won't work, it does show on both MCE and the extender machines, but when I access it - it crashes both. Will try to uninstall and re-install later.

Don't know about that - don't use it.

Well Lisa, it all works!

I had to switch my nVidia firewall off on the MCE PC to get them talking etc.

    But after that....WOW!

I was glad to see MS chose to use different infra red codes for the Xbox MCE remote.
I had worried the main MCE PC would pick up commands meant for the Xbox etc.

All the plug-ins which i installed on the MCE PC, also work on the Xbox MCE.

Napster is finally much more useable, with songs just being a click away.

I use "My Movies" to store my DVDs, and i'm glad to say that also seems fine.

    Just one complaint..
Photos don't fade/zoom in the Xbox MCE.(they just flick to the next image)

    One question
I have selected the screen saver option in the Xbox MCE settings.(i use a plasma and don't want screenburn)
Since i cannot see any options to alter anything, i'm not sure what to expect.
I have yet to see it come on.
How long does it take, and what screen saver is it?

Maybe it uses the main PCs screensaver and settings?

    Thanks

    Paul

    Hi Paul,

Good news - are you pleased with it?

I have my main HTPC connected to Plasma in lounge and the Xbox connected to CRT TV in the bedroom, so don't really bother with the screensaver.

I have noticed one bug, aspect ratio seems to have a mind of its own and is not adjustable, if I press stop and resume during playback it corrects itself.

There is a service pack for the Xbox Media Center Extender software, but Microsoft do not ship it to the UK, my supplier in the US says he will order one for me and send it on, but not sure if/when it will turn up...

Can anyone help me with importing one of these extenders for the XBox?

I've found a few on Ebay but no one wants to sell to the UK! :(

I have the cash waiting and an MCE system but can't get hold of an extender at all...
