Hey, I'm looking to spend a maximum of £400 on a new blu-ray or hd-dvd player, I was just wondering if any of you have spotted any good deals around lately?

I remember seeing a while ago somewhere if you bought 8 HD-DVD's you got the HD-E1 player free

It's going to be hooked up to a Sony D3000, i am also considering other options like either buying a PS3 or building a media center computer.

    thanks, for the help, Paul

As a guide, from Amazon UK:

    HD DVD

    Toshiba HD-E1 £199
    Toshiba HD-EP10 £383
Toshiba HD-XE1 £444 (just over what you'd like to pay)

    Coming soon on HD DVD:

Venturer (no price yet, but expect between £200 and £150)
Replacements for the Toshibas (may be a similar price)

There are lots of deals where, if you buy a Toshiba you get several free discs. Sometimes you get so many discs that you're almost getting the player for free!

    Blu-ray Disc

    Sony BDP-S300 £349
    PS3 £399
Samasung BDP1000 £450 (just over what you'd like to pay)

    Coming soon on Blu-ray Disc:

    Samsung BDP1400 £323

    Hope this helps.

The cheapest way to get into HD DVD (if you don't have an XBOX 360) is the Toshiba HD-E1 and Play has them for £179.

Next up is the HD-EP10 at £249.

If you already have a 360 then you can get the HD DVD add-on for £109.

I'm not sure if the two free film deal is still running in the UK, but a new five free film deal was announced a few weeks back, although I'm not sure when it starts.

    I hope this helps.

I can't believe Amazon is a £130 more expensive than Play.

...but the HD-E1 and PS3 are miles better! :smashin:

arg im so frustrated, can one of you legends please tell me if the 360 hd-dvd addon is any good? they're goin for like 50 quid on ebay! im thinking of getting either an xbox elite + hd addon OR a ps3... the 1080p24 output on the ps3 for blurays is tempting, but the xbox actually has good games right now.... argh... does anyone know if the elite plus the hddvd addon will output at 24Hz? i wanna get the new samsung 46 f86, and i wna watch hd movies in 24Hz, i thought, with the elite's hdmi out perhaps it could do [email protected]? this is all before even considering the 'war' thas abrewin' between the formats

For the money, they are fantastic value (and work extremely well) if you already have a 360, although I've never seen them as a long term solution for the living room.

I started off with one then upgraded to a standalone months later (selling the drive onto a friend).

Not at all, it was mainly the inconvenience of having to power up the 360 to watch a film.

They are also a little noisier than a standalone, although not half as bad as when running a game in the XBOX itself.
