Looking to purchase one soon for my 4K HTPC running on a brand new 4K tv. This is purely to take advantage of the HDMI 2.0 spec.

Any experience of games and movies on this card? Anything to be aware of? What brand should I go for? I can see a few brands out there but not sure which one I should go for. They are all around the same price.

I saw one with just one fan and others with 2 fans each, whats the deal with that? I would prefer the single fan as I am fitting it into an OrigenAE ST16T case.

IF you want to play games at 4k, then do not get a 960, as you will be very disappointed at the framerate you can achieve. If you are limited to a single card solution because of your case, then a 980 or 980ti is your best option.
As for brands, MSI or EVGA are the popular ones here.

Thanks mate. To be honest I'd only look at playing 4k videos and not gaming. Your thoughts?

I would still be looking at a 980 or 980ti if you can afford it.

Can't I'm afraid. Not worth it for me. Why do you think I need this card if I only want 4k video? I'm not precious about the 960 but I want to learn more.

Absolutely. Just want to understand why the 980 is better than the 960 just for 4K playback?

    The price is obviously prohibitive.

    960 = £150
    980 = £450

If your just looking for 4k Playback Id have thought it would be ok.. Id imagine if it says somewhere in the promotional stuff it'll do it.. id imagine it'll do it.

As others have mentioned, youve got no chance of Gaming on it through.

Gaming = not an issue. I usually tend to do that on less hardcore hardware like the Ps3 (yes I know booo)

also don't assume that one fan is quieter than 2, the MSI Twin Frozr's are fabulous and fanless upto 60c (as others are i think too?) and cant be heard much if at all anyway untill silly fan speeds that u would never see, and the 960 would still do some decent gaming at 1080p (better than current consoles)

Go for the MSI 960 imo.

or buy a 970 for £250. then you can game at say 1080 on it. i have one and seems to handle everything at 60fps+ now. i have an MSI and its silent unless in heavy use (gaming) so perfect for HTPC stuff, which is what my pc mainly gets used for.

list of 4k supported GPUS from NV:
    http://www.geforce.co.uk/hardware/technology/4k/supported-gpus

so yes, yours will be fine, you could even go for a 950 maybe?!

but for an extra £100 you can have a gaming pc better than a ps4 :)

i just upgraded having been ps3 player for years. i now can get 200 fps in fifa with everything maxed out and a solid 60fps in GTA V. both 1080p.

    my wife said i couldnt have a ps4 so i built a ps5! :)

get a 970 :) only £100 more. plus there is a half sized one, but i would expect that to be more noisy.

my 970 isnt any bigger than my last 2 gpus. are you sure it wouldnt fit?

Hi liamt, I would have agreed with you if a) I had more money to spend and b) if I really needed the extra power of the 970. If you read above, I really only need it to play 4k videos etc. 970 is unnecessary and overkill with all the research I have done so far, unless you know something that I dont?

I just also landed on the Zotac dual fan card which has a smaller build.

    Zotac NVIDIA GTX 960 AMP! Edition Graphics Card - 2GB - ZT-90303-10M - Scan.co.uk

I really want to get opinions on these smaller cards so I can go ahead and make a purchase.

Why is MSI better than Gigabyte or Zotac?
Many thanks guys, I really appreciate all the advice and help.

I agree with maybe trying to get a GTX 970, they are one of the best value to performance cards out there and are well worth that little bit more of an investment.

What case have you got? as we could tell you if it will fit or not :)

haha, no worries man. just thought it was a way to 'upgrade' from ps3 on the cheap for £70-80

im sure the 960 can play games on medium though if needs be

    http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/zotac-geforce-gtx-960-amp-edition-graphics-card,review-33176.html

seems the card gets good reviews and is silent upto 60c which is a bonus for movie watching.

i have had so many types of GPU and i cant really say which is the best brand as such. unless you are overclocking some cards wont be of interest anyway i guess.

i have a zotec 560 in my old system and it ran for a few years with no issues.

The brand is more down to personal preference.

that case looks a fairly decent size, like a mid atx, so maybe can fit a bigger GPU. says it can utilise a full size atx motherboard....

you should have spent less on the case and got a better GPU :)

Like he said though he doesn't use it for gaming and I'm guessing he did it for the looks?

Overall I don't think you'll fit a 3x fan GPU in that chassis, maybe a 2x fan GPU will fit fine.

All 900 series are fanless under 60c odd in auto fan mode. Ive played black ops 2 with vsync 60fps completly fanless.
If need one of the ickle teeny ones then it will be fine. Since gaming is 2nd on the list any one will do.
