Are there any differences between the Panasonic TH42PWD4 & TH42PW4B plasma displays?

Appart from the fact one is Black?

Here for example (Joe is always patient at explaining the difference):

http://www.avforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=45138

The difference in Bentalls (Kingston Upon Thames) is a massive £1000 (£3500 for black, £4500 for silver). The salesman was completely useless when explaining the reason for the massive difference (he started waffling "Yeah, Panasonic thought they'd try making it in black to see how it sells so they decided to discount it at first..."). Idiot.

These repetitive posts on Plasmas suggest we should have a sticky Plasma FAQ (maybe we could ask nicely to copy or link to the one being assembled over on avsforum?).

Thanks Phil, I just read my post back and it appears a bit short and shirty, whoops  ,didn't mean it to!

I think the plasma sticky is an excellent idea, btw. I think one of the reasons so many posts are popping up now is the really competitive pricing. After all you can bascially go 42" plasma for (only!) 33% more than a top-end 36" crt model. They now offer practical, real world performance and pricing is no longer in the realms of exotica.

DOH

Thanks browellm, can't think why I didn't think of that!

Do after reading the thread it looks like the D4 is not only cheaper, in black (I prefere this colour), but also seams to have slightly better picture quality due to lack of a filter the other requires!

Guess I'm going for the D4! :)

Thanks again,
Glenn.

browellm - No worries - and no offence to Glenn either - but you should see the reaction of people like divvy and rogo to this kind of question at AVSforum. They say they like to ignore these questions. Then post a stern statement about doing a search. Then do the search anyway to be helpful. Just like we did! I've sent Spectre a PM about getting the sticky.

Glenn - I've still not bought a Plasma, but I've seen the Panny's many times. They look fantastic and you won't go wrong with (nor likely see any difference between) either.
Personally I find the WVGA resolution a big enough minus to wait for the 5th generation or go to 50"s. They are a fair bit more expensive, but will hopefully make me happy in the long run.

Good luck with the purchase. Check out the Special Offers forum - I posted on a good price on the Black Panny recently.

Thanks Phil,
I saw that price! WOW! But it's a company that doesn't have the greatest reputaion for after sales service.

I guess if you get a good Panny then no problem and very GOOD price.

I'd like to buy local to me, for peace of mind and ease of getting things replaced/sorted should anything go wrong.

It looks to me that there is generally a price diference of about £400 between the two models?

So time to go haggle some more! :)
Salesman said they couldn't get the 4B at trade price for under £3500, but model I was looking at was the D4! And that if DEFFINATELY cheaper!!

Looks like doing my research might pay off!:p
