Ok so we've been told series like 24 will be shown in hidef, but will they also be shown with their DD5.1 soundtracks? I sure as hell hope so!

I get the impression SKY will use the same source as whats shown in the US, so one would assume that if a show like 24 is in 5.1 in the US, then I see no reason why SKY won't do the same.

I would expect it to be in 5.1 yeah. The DVD's are in 5.1 so there must be a 5.1 master knocking around for Hi Def.

Had this reply from Sky when I asked them about this:-

'We have not finalised the final schedules yet so I cann't let you know specifically which programming will or won't have 5.1. Wherever we can we will be broadcasting it though'

Now to me that doesn't sound promising to be honest, if they were going to broadcast it in 5.1 I'd have expected them to say so. Needless to say I've replied saying I'll be very disappointed if shows like 24 or Lost aren't broadcast in 5.1 and I won't be the only one!

I thought HD had to contain 5.1 DD as standard.

HD isn't 5.1 by standard but Sky do try and make you think that with their adverts (especially the ones in the front and back of the new Sky mag)

I am sure a fair amount of HD programming will be in stereo :(

If Sky don't accompany their HD broadcasts of US shows like 24 with DD5.1 soundtracks then I hope as many people complain as is possible cos I'll be damned if I'm paying a premium and then not having it broadcast as it should be

Dolby Digital is the audio standard but that comes in many flavours.
Any recent drama/genre show made in HD will have a 5.1 soundtrack and I suspect most documentaries will also take advantage of the better audio provided by HD.
Most movies made in the last decade will have 5.1 audio and older movies have probably already been remixed where possible, the rest may stick to basic DD2.0 or even DD1.0 audio.

    DD2.0 stereo IS stereo.

DD2.0 is a format and tou can't compare it to simply 'stereo'....'stereo' what?
It's a bit like saying is PCM or mp3 better than stereo, which doesn't make sense.

AFAIK you can't have DD 1.0, just DD 2.0 mono.

HD has DD 5.1 capability as standard, but it doesn't mean that all programmes will be in 5.1

I for one will be complaining if the vast majority of HD is not 5.1. I am paying a premium for high quality sound and pics not for one without the other.

I think I have too, but i'm sure they mean DD2.0 mono.
DD1.0 would only play out one channel ?

Yep the center dialogue channel which would make sense really for a mono soundtrack:)

Anyhow I think the vast majority of native HD productions will be 5.1 and the rest comprising of SD upconverts will be stereo which a decent amp can make good use of.

What are the broadcasters supposed to do ? Pull the 5.1 out of thin air ?

If the 5.1 is there, it will be broadcast, and if it's not, it won't. End of story.

When you phone up all they will say is "We have not had any other people complain about the lack 5.1 surround and not many people want their programs in 5.1 anyway"
Which is exactly what they said when i phoned up about DD stereo and when i phoned up about widescreen!

Sky are a joke but we don't have telewest up here so we are stuck with them if we want HD:(

Well if a program was only made with a 2 channel stereo soundtrack and the producers have neither the money or desire to remix/create a 5.1 track then the hardware is not at fault.

You do not send a colour TV back if a channel shows a b&w movie:)

Just about every show broadcast in the US in hidef has a 5.1 soundtrack e.g. Lost, 24, Prison Break etc etc... All I'm saying is that when they are broadcast here they'd better have their 5.1 soundtrack. I have a sneaky suspicion they won't have to be honest

Given that it would take some effort not to broadcast the DD audio (which is standard for HD this and that side of the Atlantic) I fully expect DD5.1 to be present on the bast majority of HD content.
My only concern is how well it will be implemented on the footy and other sports given there "live" nature and dynamic camera work.

The fact that DD5.1 has appeared on all the movies channels since the HD upgrades went live speaks volumes:)

I think it could also come down to when broadcasters decide to go HD.. For example, Lost & Prison Break are on C4/E4 and Five respectively - neither of whom have committed to going HD yet AFAIAA, so unless Sky managed to buy the rights for the later series of these, I wouldn't expect them to be in 5.1.

I think that there is a lot of confusion here as to what "5.1" actually is...it seems to have been explained in previous threads quite clearly IMHO...

I think if you remove the term "5.1" and replace it with "Dolby Digital", things will be a lot clearer. As previously stated, Dolby Digital comes in various flavours - from 1.0 (mono) to 5.1 Surround EX(which most people incorectly call 6.1...;) )

I have enought faith in Sky to the point that I don't think they would invest a lot of money in bringing us HD in the first place without doing it properly....eventually. I think the Dolby Digital track will be there from the outset - whether it's 5.1 or not is not down to Sky. It's down to the studio that made the show...after all, Planet Earth is filmed in HD but has a non DD stereo soundtrack...

Now, when are we all going to start complaining that there's no dts on Sky HD...?:D
