Any car mechanics here? Car problem....help needed

Hi

My Renault Megane 2.0 litre (petrol 1998) has an intermittant fault which seems to be getting worse. The car is stuttering when pulling away and losing power. It then gets a power surge and shoots forward. When stationary its shaking and juddering quite a lot and feels like its going to stall.

Any ideas? I had a service very recently and sparks plugs cleaned.

A mate suggested dirty petrol may be causing it. If so what would I need to do to check that and fix it? If not this what else could be causing this?

Any help much appreciated.

Could be 101 things with all the electrics on the car, first step would be get it hooked upto a computer to read any error codes. Other then that the only thing i can think of is blocked exhaust.

A dirty fuel fill has partially blocked the fuel filter.
Replace or clean!

thanks. Do you know what I would be charged for a diagnostics test (roughly)? Is that something Kwik Fit could do or would I need a specialist garage?

Megane's are notorious for burning out coil packs, we've been through 2 sets on a 52 plate already, about £38 each from Renault or half that from a Motor Factor. They invariably fail in pairs, wait until it is running roughly then pull the ignition leads off one at a time, then putting them back before taking off the next. If the engine note gets worse or the engine stalls that cylinder is OK, if there is little or no change in engine note that is a dodgy cylinder, most likely due to a failed/failing coil pack.

Look in the back of any RAC van, they carry a crate of Renault coil packs :rotfl:

Also try cleaning idle control valve. Can cause near cutting out symptons as you mention. Easy to pop it off and clean with brake cleaner.

You got a Haynes Manual? Throttle Bodies are also notorious on the smaller engined renaults so possibly try cleaning that too. Other problems on that specific engine is the engine temp sensor is stuffed. Costs about a tenner from a dealer. All the things laready mentioned could be at fault though!

thanks. Is that an easy job that i could try and do (i have no mechanical experience) or a job for a mechanic?
I always get the garage to do it, filter is a tenner, happens every two years to me.
Mine is doing it now.

Spot on mate. Had the car hooked up to one of those diagnostic testing computers. Changed ignition coil pack and now runs like a dream....thanks.
