Driving along the main road through my valley I noticed a camera and large box set up and padlocked to a lamppost. The position of the camera was about three feet high and pointing towards the oncoming traffic, just the right heighth to catch number plates. With the tax disc now history could this be the new weapon to catch those without tax and insurance. Normally I've seen DVLA Astra estates parked up for a day's duration.

It sounds like the temp covert speed camera we had in our village, it's not intended to prosecute drivers but to determine the real speed drivers are going through the village.

Would they put a camera so low, in vandalism area?
These low boxes, in my experience, are usually accompanied by cables across the road.
They determine speed of traffic over a lengthy period (days/weeks)

Maybe different sorts but the ones we had were cameras, they looked like a small black flight case that was mounted on a speed limit pole.

They can be used for speeding, we had a set not 50 yards from our house a year or so ago.
Which showed the average speed in our 30mph zone was 41mph....
Which means some people are doing a whole heap more, the utter ****s.

We have passed another four, definately cameras, no cables across the road. Looks like the area is being targetted. Cameras are clamped to road signs on NSL road and on village name sign covering both sides of the road. If they are there tomorrow I'll try and take a photo. They were not there yesterday.

Surprised they put cameras where they could easily be booted/set alight etc.

The camera in 003 has been moved since this morning. It was at the same heighth as the others but has been repositioned to the top of the sign. Possibly because the sun would have been right in it's lens this afternoon. So, someone keeping a close eye on them.

Not seen anything like those before? If they are anpr cameras you can put them on every lamp post for me. Love the way they've been installed, suprising how useful a piece of 4x2 can be ;)

They look more like just CCTV cameras running off a battery in the cage on the ground. They are clearly self contained and there are no antennae for wireless transmission. Although impossible to tell from the photos, the cables look very thin in diameter and look like your standard 1 for video signal, 1 for low voltage power.

So someone is either hooking the recordings up to ANPR software retrospectively or they are looking at vehicle movements for some purpose.

To me it seems too many cameras just for vehicle movement, two either side of the village when one would suffice and it was only last week that we had one of those infuriating traffic surveys that caused stop start movement.

I suppose the cameras could be taken back to DVLA and the info downloaded from the memory. It only has to be proved that the car was on the road without tax for a summons to be issued.

Yeah I'm not 100% convinced what they are, but but the fact they are running self contained means whatever function they are performing it requires retrospective analysis. That could be a range of things including ANPR, but it's certainly new to me and I do a LOT of mileage!

Unless anyone approaches them from the back and knocks them off/steals them.
Not even close to condoning this behaviour, just seems really weird that they're putting them in harm's way so readily.

I quote someone from another forum I'm a member of:

Citysync ANPR cameras, although if they were fixed like that around here they would be on eBay the next day [IMG]

Now that's an Essex boy for you..................
