I'm on t-mobile and I want to get an iphone. One of my mates gets 30% of o2 line rental so I was thinking of getting a 16gb iphone 3GS on contract, passing the sim over to my dad so he can use his unlocked phone. I would then unlock the Iphone and use that as my main mobile.

Unfortunatley I am not well read up on Iphone unlocking, but my plan was to get a turbo sim. After a bit of reading here I have noticed that the turbo sims are a bit of hit and miss and that you can not unlock 2.21 phones.

So is my only option to get secondhand unlocked 3g Iphone and sell off my 3gs one? If so would i only be missing the benefits of the camera? From what I understand the Battery life increases as the o/s is more efficient?

    Cheers

    Dej

While I am not going to upgrade my 3g to a 3gs, I sure as hell wouldn't downgrade a 3gs to a 3g. It's not just that the 3gs has a better camera, it's also got a 50% faster processor and more operating RAM. I curse my 3g sometimes when it does one of its 3-sec 'pauses' before painting the screen. Because that's under the hood Apple didn't make a big deal out of it but you are taling about a significant different in speed.

You're right though. You can't unlock a 2.21 iphone. You can jailbreak them though, even with version the 3.0 of the software.

    But it's your choice...

Some 2.21 firmwares have a low-number baseband that can be downgraded to be unlockable by Yellowsnow, the freeware unlocking program. Most phones that come with 2.21 firmware have a more recent baseband that is not unlockable by that method.

That link looks slightly dodgy to me as it seems to be a plug for one 'unlocker' masquerading as a news article. There are a lot of people on the Net advertising iPhone-unlocking services, and sadly quite a few of them are scammers. Caveat emptor.

Personally I would either wait for a kosher freeware phone unlocking program than shell out money to one of these people, or maybe buy a pre-unlocked iphone from Play.com. The 3g models were £600 last time I looked. I doubt the 3gs models will t be less, if and when Play stock them.

Cheers guys, I don't want to spend £600 for an unlocked phone so my best option is to wait or sell my 3GS and buy a 3g...

    Iphone prices as o2 website

    http://shop.o2.co.uk/update/paygo.html

    • iPhone 3G 8GB - £342.50
    • iPhone 3G S 16GB - £440.40
    • iPhone 3G S 32GB - £538.30
And you can unlock and jailbrake with quickpwn 3.0

    Hope this helps :smashin:

QuickPwn 3.0 will apparently allow you to jailbreak 3.0 firmware, but I haven't seen any iphone hacking site claiming that it can unlock 3.0. It would remarkable if version 3.0 of the iPhone software was more vulnerable to unlocking hacks than version 2.21.
