UK faces £34bn bill for black hole in EU budget - Telegraph

Auditors have identified a black hole in European Union budgets that could lead to extra demands for cash from the British taxpayer of up to £34 billion over the next six years.

David Cameron will be legally obliged to make up a share of a shortfall of £259 billion by 2020 with liabilities for the Treasury estimated at £33.7bn, calculated at the usual rate of Britain’s EU contributions.

What was that about putting a freeze on the EU budget
Cameron wins agreement on EU budget freeze - Channel 4 News
The wording will be published tomorrow and, if approved by other EU countries, will mean the EU's spending rises only in line with inflation from 2013-20.
well that worked out well didn't it.

Surely nobody is blaming David Cameron for this?

Ofcourse not but it makes a mockery of his victory/voice in the EU.
It is very much do as your told and pay up.

Nation states are becoming franchises like our dodgy rail network, "You can run the country, but we want you to pay us X per year, oh and our regulators will set the rules".

Referendum anyone?

I think I' UKIP anyone' might be more immediately pertinent .!

Let's get the hell out of this awful socialist experiment.

I saw this story yesterday in the Telegraph. I had a quick look round, not comprehensive admittedly, but couldn't see it anywhere else.
Do other media organisations agree with the Telegraph?

I can see it reported elsewhere in some minor news sources, but I don't know to what extent they are just regurgitating the Telegraph's story

Well here is the source Court of auditors warns of multi-billion EU budget gap | EurActiv
Interesting bit here
The Commission welcomed the report, but also said that with such communications, the ECA may be bypassing its role.

Mmmmm, anyway its not reported yet as no one has been asked to pay yet I guess.
As he explained, the commitments were a legal obligation and member states will be “requested one day to pay”. “The commitments are there, the money is not there,” he said.

and further
He further said the Commission shared the spirit of the report, but found it unclear how ECA arrived at the figure of €326 billion, while the Commission had retained the figure of €322 billion based on data from ECA itself.

Adamowicz said that de-commitment was possible when the Commission standards in project management were not met. “We very much live by this concept,” he said.

Regarding the €4.7 billion amending budget compared to the €326 or €322 billion of commitments under previous budget periods, he said that it may sound a big number, but was just a “projection of payments in the future”. “There is no need to worry about this huge number”, he said.

Not sure whether to laugh or cry.

As Ludboržs explained, throughout the 2007 to 2013 spending period, the priority was given to spending the money - ‘use it or lose it’ - rather than to achieving good results. For instance, the choice of projects to receive EU funds focused first on disbursing the EU money available, secondly on complying with the rules, and only then - and to a limited extent - on results and impact.

I guess cry it is.

I'm not sure how that hasn't been torn apart yet, but look at the original blog post from the mystical Mr Murphy.
Apparently he put it together in an hour or two and then when questioned about it says he is in hospital like some sort of dog ate my homework excuse.

He also considers all reliefs to be benefits and seems to believe that all Income is the property of the state, it decides how much you can keep.

He's not right on much and is on form here.
Plenty of people on Facebook lap it up though, while incredulous at the government graph they accept this one without question as it appeals to their own bias, further it is conformation bias too. Just like that bought and paid for report about EU migrations paying more than they take out, when a little digging shows a literary of facts, figures and issues left out to massage the the final value to be alighted with their paymasters intent. This report will be doled out regularly though with conformation bias giving it legs.

Same with Switzerland having freedom of movement, some people (lots of newspaper writers seemingly) don't appear to read the news, it's still said and even reported on as if the swiz never voted against it.

Agree with that.

However, it seems plenty of people are sceptical of information and statistics coming out of government these days, also sceptical of ministerial and opposition speeches. They don't know what to believe any more.

Its a great pity that stuff coming out of Westminster and associated government bodies cannot be trusted. The distrust is so bad now even ONS figures and statistics are treated with suspicion - that they also have been massaged and manipulated to meet current government targets.

So people search the internet and access social media looking for more reliable information. Of course, all they get is more duff stuff.

... Maybe I'm being too cynical.

... Maybe I'm being too cynical.

Not at all. I would suggest that one o the biggest problems today is that no-one knows who or what they can trust anymore.
You can't trust the media, they openly flaunt their agendas and truth is massaged into oblivion. You can't trust politicians, but isn't that always the way.
You can't trust people who sell you stuff, they just want your money (it matters not if you are buying lasagne with horsemeat or hi-tech with built in redundancy after 13 months) you aren't totally sure what you are buying anymore.
Is your money, savings and pension, really safe? Or is it just a way of someone making money for themselves and sod you.?
Your GP is under too much pressure to really give you an accurate and reliable diagnosis, and the restof the health service is creaking. Don't get I'll, you can't be sure of getting better.
Are the next generation getting the best education possible or is it a cut-price service that could do better?
The police, defence, security, are they working for us or themselves and the statisticians?

You have every right to be cynical

Reading this, I thought for a minute other party's supporters and ministers don't draw pensions.
No mistaking its anti Tory message then.

How does that even make sense?

Pensions have been taken out of welfare to avoid upsetting tory voting pensioners? How would that upset them??

And to then say welfare was fattened up after just stating something was removed from it... Bonkers.
