I was fortunate enough to see Annihilation in the cinema, and it was comfortably my film of 2018. Really looking forward to seeing this again when I have the opportunity - Salisbury & Barrow's score has been on heavy rotation ever since.

I'm still not 100% sure about this film. Overall it was very interesting but there was one bit in particular when they first enter the shimmer and they were walking, then they walked some more and on and on. This type of scene can work very well, the film Lucky is my most recent example of when it works well, but here it just dragged on and I fast forwarded.

It will definitely be added to the pile of films I want to see and hear though.

I thought this was quite generic. Interesting, yes, a re-watch no.

Thanks for the review Simon. I blind bought the steelbook of this because I read the book and quite enjoyed that. I am sure I will like this though with Garland directing - I loved Ex Machina and he was heavily involved with Dredd of course too.

      A solid 6/10 here
Thanks for the Netflix comparison but I think others are also interested in the sound comparison. Good to read 4k Netflix isn't too far away from 4k disc

Seems like a lot of standard horror type flicks where people get bumped off one by one to me. It was very average I thought but of course what one person loves, another hates.

I'll be picking this up for sure, great film, it looked spectacular on Netflix with Dolby Vision and it sounds like this UHD is a definite uptake on that.... been waiting for this UHD to be released so will definitely buying this one........

I have watched the Netflix version twice now, several months apart, and both times I have noticed that the audio has what seems like a reversed dynamic range. Anytime there is action ie. gunshots, roaring etc, they seem to be extremely quiet compared to the rest of the sound. I hope this is fixed on the disc version!

I have noticed this phenomenon on occasion in other Netflix and Amazon Prime stuff as well and it's really disappointing. I get that they often flatten the dynamic range due to lowest common denominator, but to actually make the moments that would normally be loud even quieter than the rest of the mix is really stupid.

I can agree on that, disc audio vs streaming service is the main reason I buy the disc.

Would love to see an AVF audio review of all 3-4 services with the same film disc (may be tricky)

This film... god it’s like watching a dream, gets under your skin. I’m not going pretend I fully understand it, but boy it stays with me. It really pushes my buttons, unsettles me, as I watch it I hate it and love it at the same time.
The a/v is a step up from the Netflix 4K, I’m annoyed I never got the chance to experience it on the big screen.

I think far too many movies give Atmos a pass based on what it does do, but ignore al the moments it's sitting there doing nothing when it should be delivering. In this movie, the weird synth sound bits go everywhere, etc. and yes it's used appropriately in many places, but what sticks in my draw thinking back was this moment where they are standing in the forest and I hear bird noises in the front channels, perhaps even in the front height a bit, but it's dead silent all around and above me. Where are the forest sounds in the surround channels??? I'm not standing in a black hole for God's sake. A real forest would have things going on all around not just on a two dimensional screen.

Sadly, a lot of Atmos movies are this way. They only really kick in the surrounds and especially the heights during major action scenes like it's too much effort to mix the entire movie in Atmos when it's often the quieter scenes where Atmos is most effective as you can pick out a bird overhead in a quiet moment much more easily than when all the channels are lit up at the same time with explosions or whatever.

Crimson Peak in DTS:X is an example of a film that "gets" what quiet moments are for with immersion with little creaky freaky sounds coming from every corner and nook in the room.

Personally, I'm a little tired of every movie with Atmos getting universal praise from reviewers. I've heard better mixed 5.1 movies than half the Atmos titles I've listened to thus far. Annihilation isn't remotely as bad as many I've heard, but it's not a "9" in my book either. More like a 7.

That's an interesting take and I remember watching the latest Blair Witch film on Apple TV on simple DD 5.1 before they upgraded it to atmos and it sounded absolutely spectacular. Brilliant immersion towards the end, I was amazed. Another film that really surprised me with its sound mix was the drama 'Lion' - that was 5.1 lossless and the mix was so enveloping, with as you say above elements of nature beautifully used throughout the soundstage. So I totally agree with you that the atmosphere can be heightened in those moments that aren't just about the loudest sequences.

Very tempted to blind buy this to see what all the fuss is about.
Without verging into spoiler territory, what are the views on the actions of the human protagonists?Do they stay within the bounds of reasonable plausibility or do they sink to Prometheus levels of stupidity?

The women in this film make very human decisions. Some of those actions are deeply flawed, some of them make sense, much real life. Ultimately, they are put into a pretty unique situation and not everybody is going to reaction the same way. All I can say is that there was never a moment of implausibility for me when it came to the characters decisions/motivations.

Oh, and to respond to @MartinH32, if all you got from this film was a 'standard horror' with people
being bumped off one by one
then I really don't know what to say to that because I didn't get a simple slasher film, and I imagine Alex Garland would find it a great shame if that was all anybody took from Annihilation.

Bad decisions(taking the wrong turn et al!) I can take.In fact most all films of this genre would struggle without them.
      Thanks for that.
I’m just waiting for it to either hit a 2for30 or go sub15 at wowhd (getting close at £15.83 currently)

I guess we all see different things in movies like we do music and if we didn't the world wouldn't be quite as colourful a place :)
It was quite hyped if I remember and look forward to seeing it, but I found it disappointing and like I mentioned before, pretty generic. That's obviously not to say others don't, although I'm sure some would agree with me.

Yeah, that's fair enough, mate. It's not a film for everybody, that I can admit to. I just felt that you were potentially misleading others when you made it sound like a slasher film, that's all. But yeah, it was always bound to be polarising in hindsight.
