sounds like you were generous with 3 Cas

guessing Kumari would have given this a solid 1 (after his marking for MIB4)

shame as I enjoyed even some of his "lesser" stuff like transporter and valerian a bit

I enjoyed this, daft, undemanding, unoriginal but entertaining.

I think 3 is harsh. I agree that as a film it really doesn't deliver what it promises nor does it live up to other assassin type films. But it is an enjoyable enough action flick, I'd say more like a 4 or a 5.

      Cheers,

      Nigel

I was teetering on a 3.5 and then I remembered the hilarious death scene of
her parents, where they both turned to the camera laughing as a truck hit them full on
. The entire cinema (surprisingly full) laughed out loud. I suspect that was not the intention of that supposedly tragic flashback.

Have to say that was a sensational read @Casimir Harlow . You should watch rubbish films more often . I'm almost tempted to watch it now just to see what you were talking about for myself. Only almost though.

Is Besson a spent force now?

Yeah that was funny, almost as if they took stock footage from a day time soap opera.

I think that's it. When was the last vaguely original idea he had (even Valerian wasn't his)?

He's been peddling his own recycled ideas for decades, and Anna fits the mould; what's shocking is that it's him behind the camera. This is the guy who wrote and directed one of my top 3 films of all time. It's a tragedy. He's gone full De Palma.

Besson will likely disappear along with Europa Corp, they were already in deep trouble after Valerian and have followed it up with this. Not to mention the troubling talk surrounding Besson’s personal life.

Mr Harlow - Don't diss "The Stath!".
OK Transporter 3 was so bad that I have never finished it but 1 was excellent and 2 was passable.

So as I was saying - Don't diss "The Stath" (except for T3)!

      P.S.
      Besson multiverse(TM) - Oh my :)

I must admit as much as it's a tasty male fantasy, I am getting weary of the conceit of skinny young women effortlessly beating the snot out of men twice their size (and who presumably are also highly combat trained). Atomic Blonde got away with it as we see Lorraine get thoroughly knocked to hell in the process, and struggling by the skin of her teeth.

A fully trained female MMA fighter of small stature could surprise a larger man if he didn't know who he was dealing with. They are lethal and it has actually happened in real life. But if the larger person has a clue?

Statham's great, don't remember criticising him?

Transporter films are great, but they end after 2. Third one lost me around the time we saw her squat and urinate. I'm not really sure what they were going for, but it didn't work. The reboot? Pah.

The Mechanic 2 is hands down one of the worst films I’ve ever seen.

Yuk! I don't think I got that far lol. If you have seen my taste in films it's pretty broad and forgiving but I only watched about the first 10-15 minutes then gave up.

So women can only be a bad ass if they have seven shades of poop kicked out of them. Hmmmm.
All action films are a case of suspension of belief, some more than others.

That's a little unfair. Atomic Blonde was still pretty unrealistic but at least it allowed you to suspend belief at least a little, because she was taking some punishment as well. Which I guess is what you just said :) Still a little unfair though.

Daaaamn son, I was interested in this when I briefly saw a trailer, as it seemed like the kind of film I like. I'll be steering clear. Maybe I'll go and watch Nikita as I don't remember seeing that.

I agree it's not good at all but there's a world, in fact a multiverse, of far worse films out there.
If you had my viewing habits you'd know this already :p;)

Could we tone down the references to Atomic Blonde please? I haven't watched it yet!!! As for Anna, I'd added it to my list but after reading the review I think that I'll move on. Too much other good stuff to see. As for Besson, his best work was, IMHO, The Fifth Element. I still enjoy watching it, but as for the rest, meh.

In relation to other Besson work, I'm going to have to get Taxi and see if that's as fun as I remember.

Depends on the circumstances. If its Alita, Leeloo or Black Widow you make some allowance for superhuman qualities and comic book worlds. If you're aiming for something closer to home, victory cant come too easily or it breaks the illusion. Not necessarily about gender, but about biology and physics. It would be the same with a tiny, slight man taking on bigger and stronger opponents.

Took the words right out of my mouth. But to be fair (there's that word again) I would class them in the same category as female MMA fighters in terms of being highly skilled (in BJJ and movie fu respectively) with enough speed and power to surprise you.

I think lucas’s issue doesn’t come from gender or stature, more a failure to convince.
