I have just received Le Mans (Steve McQueen 1971) on R2 DVD.
The DVD has an aspect ratio of 2:35:1 Anamorphic Widescreen.
Everything is ok (pre movie credits fill screen) until the movie itself is playing when aspect changes so there is a thick black border around all 4 sides of image.
The only way I have been able to fill the screen is to Zoom in 133% which cuts a very small amount of all sides.
I would have expected the image to be automatically stretched to fill the screen.

Any help appreciated with this minor problem.

    Thanks in advance

    Tom

Sounds to me like your tv is switching into 4:3 mode. That's the only thing that would explain bars at the left and right.

To test the disc play it on a pc and see what aspect window comes up - it should obviously be a 16:9 ratio - and have black bars top and bottom.

    :)

Have you got your DVD player set to output 16x9? What you describe sounds like it isn't.

With a film in ratio 2.35:1 you should expect black bars top and bottom. You should not expect any at the sides, and everything in the film should be the right shape - not too fat nor tall, circles round etc..

I have tried a few different things, laptop full width picture bars top and bottom, our other DVD player (cheepo one) full width picture but double size black bars top and botton so vertical picture only takes up 1/3 of screen.
Our 150E even when playing with settings best option is as reported with zoom or leave as is.
It would appear that rather than stretching the 'un-stretched' vertical part of the picture it's shrinking the 'pre-stretched' horizontal part of the picture to correct the aspect ratio.

The most common cause of "full width picture but double size black bars top and botton so vertical picture only takes up 1/3 of screen." is that the DVD player is not set to output 16x9 where present on the disc. This is typically a menu item and may be referred to as TV shape or similar. Set it to 16x9 or wide.

But then, I've told you that already.

I just had this problem with my projector. Turned out it was a pal/ntsc mismatch. It is not an NTSC disc by any chance?

Hang on! I think the film was made that way,as was the film Grand Prix

Occasional masking top bottom and on the sides.

Meant to be 'artistic' in those days.

Try playing it on a friends dvd/crt setup.
