Anamorphic Images

How do you handle anamorphic images in Final Cut Pro? Do you stretch out the image and place the black bars on top and bottom, or do you leave the image squeezed in and let the widescreen television handle the stretching? Also, how much better is having an anamorphic image vs. using your camcorder's fake 16:9, which simply places the black bars over your standard image, losing a lot of picture information in the process. Sorry if I sound a little naive about this, but I haven't dealt with anamorphic images before.
