I love seeing other peoples' ideas and now i'm looking for some feedback on my own setup. In a few days i will the proud owner of a new home theatre. As i set it up i will post photos.
My amp and speakers finally arrived.
    Marantz SR-8002 $1200
    Speakers $300.
Also, ultra cheap cable at 100m for $24, 2 x optical cables at $6, 5.1 pc sound card for $24,
I made a rough picture of my home using powerpoint :)

I have a lovely white TV stand, but its so cluttered. Something to think about. Also, speakers are in the process of going on the wall. Shame its 1ft thick concrete and my drill is pretty battered.
One decision i should make is about putting my HTPC into a separate boiler room that is conveniently placed so i can make it into a huge server room. Currently i run my media from the 1tb time capsule, but its full and the wireless 'N' seems not so good for streaming bluray rips.

I also wish to show my old setup. Living in Korea as an english teacher is pretty cool, but like Japan, space is a bit of a premium commodity. I spent 2007-2008 living in a 'one room' setup. Kitchen and bathroom are attached to where i live, sleep etc. After having lived in a variety of places, going back to being almost a student was kinda depressing. However, i saved my money and upgraded my home as of late December '08. Below is my old place..

Next to that was my office.

oops, i forgot to order cables! Im gonna strip down an old 10m interconnect to use for now. Cable comes tomorrow, but my amp and speakers arrived 10 minutes ago. Damnit!
Also, looking into putting my tv on the wall. Not sure how comfortable i am doing it myself.

got almost everything i think for now. But lots of work today on arranging it. I have too much stuff on the right.
    Speakers need to be mounted
AppleTV is not connecting to my network for some reason so got to fix that too.
anyway, its a start. I spent most of today fighting with my Envy24 based 5.1 sound card. Worthless piece of junk it turns out. Only works in certain media players by forcing it with ac3filter. Otherwise i only get stereo output.
    Working well though for now.

loving my setup now its finally taking shape. Got the rears mounted on the wall. Took me 20 minutes to drill the holes! They used some heavy concrete for the walls here!
Only problem im having is the appletv wont stream from my macbook. It cuts out after a few seconds. Seems a widespread problem. Works fine from my vista machine, but that removes the convenience of controlling from the bedroom.
I know i could just connect a wire direct from macbook to cyrus, but thats another wire trailing across the room that i dont want.

Well, i chopped and changed some things. It has taken me a long time to get into a state where everything is actually useable. With ease anyway.
Before i would get frustrated to hell with my htpc. HDMI handshaking issues were the bane of my cinema. Vista was seemingly the cause of most of it.
Last week, my vista install suddenly realised it wasnt genuine. Oops! So, i took the plunge and installed Windows 7. Lo and behold, ac3filter isnt actually necessary and for the first time ever i saw the DTS indicator light up on my receiver. Before that i always got PCM. Of course, no real indication of any actual improvement, but i feel better now that my amp is given the chance to decode the original encoding as opposed to the pcm it was given to wrok with before.
Im sure the audiophiles out there will tell me that pcm and DTS are the same damn thing, but as you will see in my photos, i kinda went completely against the audiophile ethos with my choice of speakers in bedroom and office.
Sadly, the HDMI still has some problems. I have to turn on pc last to ensure it connects, but its fairly reliable now. Even on wake up it will pickup the connection again.
Interestingly, i had the chance to try a mac mini connected via hdmi and that connected without fail regardless of which component was turned on first. Just i couldnt get it to output 5.1 through spdif. Challenge for when i have enough money for a dedicated mac anyway.
Here follows new pics and details...

The motivation behind most of this was.....energy and space. Im trying for minimalism and as i get older the looming threat of kids running around is making me reconsider my old philosophy of 'big is better'.
I got nervous enough when the little lady steps near my tweeters! Sooner or later everything is going on the wall and bose satellites will go up easier than some floorstanders :)

Next on the list: change 5.1 speakers (Mission M-cubes??), change HTPC to a mac, change WII case to a black one, get some decent headphones and maybe an ipod classic.

Well, i went ahead and upgraded the crap out of my system. Ordered a 47inch led tv, kef 3005se, imac 21.5",i7 desktop and a new black glass desk.
Over time components have been and gone. Sold them on a korean equivalent to craigslist.
The tv is going soon, which will pay around a third of the cost of new tv.
One thing im really considering though is to wallmount my new tv and put all the living room stuff in the boiler room, which is right next to the living room.
Wonder, if anyone sees this post could you advise as to whether or not my xbox and ps3 controllers would work through quite a thick wall. Bluetooth on the mini seems so weak that i would use a usb extender and bluetooth dongle anyway, but dont think i can do that with the consoles.

New tv arrived. Lovely 47inch led on the wall.

Got rid of the old tv stand, it went as a package deal with the old tv to a friend who bought them.

Converted my boiler room into my media room. Whacked everything in there and even through a foot of concrete, the bluetooth connection works with 360,ps3 and wii controllers.
Of course, it means i have to get up and change the disk in another room, but its a small price to pay for my attempt at minimalism.

Heres the stripped out boiler room, that was just full of junk before

After a few hours of cutting and drilling...
Just bought some cheap mdf from a local store, cost me about 5 pounds for all of it.
Here is my amp and htpc as well as a 4tb drive bay
    [IMG]
I made 4 shelves in total. All of them are 9mm mdf. Not so strong sadly, so i had to brace all them. The ps3 was the worst offender for making it bend.
Anyway, came together kinda well. Considering i never really have to see this area, maybe it was a waste of time. Still, im happy with it.
Please remember, im no carpenter!! Just a guy with a drill and a jigsaw
    [IMG]
This was just after putting the tv on the wall.
For this part, i just let the engineers from LG come and do it. My tv was heavily delayed so they offered free install to make up for it.
Also, they initially sent me a stand instead of a wall bracket. I changed my mind after ordering the stand. They said they would exchange them, but only ended up dropping off the wall bracket. No one mentioned the stand, so im gonna keep it i think:clap:
    Before any cables went up..
    Cables going in...
About four hours after the tv went on the wall and i was ready to give up for the day. Got a ton of cable management to do, but my trunking is too small.
I will go and pickup a bigger one when im in the mood. Also, i plan to hide the speaker cables under the wall paper. Rented house, so i can really do any more cutting into the wall.
In osx i had some problems with overscan, but i found a setting in the tv that fixed it called 'just scan'**

    **UPDATE**
    [IMG]

    **UPDATE2**
    [IMG]

I bought a tv stand in the end. The trunking on the floor and the plant pots just werent doing it for me.
Sorry for the iphone pics... nikon d40 is busted. Will update later when i can borrow my friends d80

    **UPDATE3**
Borrowed a nikon d40 in the end to take pics.

Grandview 100inch pulldown screen. Hella cool

Screen fitting brackets. The false ceiling is too weak to hold it

My pride and joy these days. Tv hardly gets a look in. Cost around 2600 dollars and its a new model LG CF151 LCOS projector

Check out the bodge job fitting! The false celing is way too weak to support this monster projector. So i used brackets intended for the garden. Drilled some holes, made a few cuts here and there. Solid as a rock, could probably swing on it!
Cables go through trunking and into hdmi out 2 on the amp in the boiler room

100 inch screen with 1080p source from mac mini

the mess that is the control system. Regret buying the dinovo mini keyboard. Reception even from 5m away is terrible. Gonna get a harmony remote sooner or later and try to get used to using the ipad for input

The new tv is cool. Seems a ton bigger than the old one, it's only 5 inches though. [that's what she said]
Cant say the picture seems better though. Maybe the old one was too good, or i need to fiddle with the settings. Perhaps i should start downloading 1080p instead of 720p. Just my 4tb is almost full already :(

Shame i have neighbors above, below and to the sides. Cant crank it up to 11:(

They are good at low volume, just wish i could push it a bit more. More exhilarating that way

Updated previous post with projector images to keep them on page 1.

Latest purchase is an upgrade to the bedroom.

Replaced the bose 161 speakers with Tannoy eyris 1 bookshelf speakers. Again, its controlled by ipad and airtunes through an airport express.
