    Hi

I have a friend who has a sony DAVS880 (bigger brother to the 550 all in one system with powered sub and floorstander speakers).

The problem is the main unit has given up the ghost but he is quite taken by the styling of the 880 speakers (very much like Elac) and what he wants to do is just plug these speakers into a cheap AV amp and buy a decent DVD player for his home cinema rig!

I dont understand the speaker spec but if he bought a Yamaha 759 or something similar, would this be okay for those speakers or is it a lost cause?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I have a Sony DAVS880. I think the issue your mate will have will be the sub. It is not individually powered so i think he will be ok to use the speakers but will have to get a new self powered sub. Certainly thats what my mate did who had an 800.

Thanks JimmyT - can I ask what amp he ended up using, are there any risks to the speakers of not using the Sony head unit (its actually an 888 not the 880 - my mistake).

Just had a friends Sony DAVS DVD/Amp go wrong, very similar speakers to the one in the link.

Ended up replacing the sub with an old Kef eggs mk1 PSW I had spare and buying a Denon 1507, existing speakers worked fine, just needed to cut the adapters off and use the bare wires.

He already had a separate DVD recorder so he's using it for DVD movies.

Sounds a whole lot better now :)

That's exactly what I was hoping someone would say

I was quite nervous to advise using the sepakers on say a Denon or Yammy amp just in case the speakers wren't up to the job.

The 888 has a powered sub so I think that will be okay.

I think you'll be fine recommending a Denon or Yammy, good news if the sub is a proper one, saves a few quid.

The 1507 is damn good for the money, Superfi - £210. There's a matching 1730 DVD for £130.

A mate has had a couple of the lower end Yammys recently and they were pretty good also.

The Denon auto setup is great for people not used to the old spl meter method.
