I have a Yamaha RX-V350 which I am generally impressed with. My front speakers are Tannoy Mercury M1s which I'm also pleased with. I'm not sure though whether these should be set to "medium" or "large" on the Yamaha. When set to medium there is quite a dramatic drop in volume compared to large, but when set to large the amp seems to ignore the sub even though the "subwoofer?" option is set to yes. The sub works great when the speakers are set to medium).

My question is: does anybody know whether there is a way to use the full range of the Tannoys as well as the sub?

Not really an answer to your question, but leave it on which ever mode you like the sound of best.
Also some sub woofers have a normal speaker input and output which they use to detect the sub frequencies, i think it's simply a pass through and the speakers are still powered by the amp and the sub by it's internal amp.
