I have recently upgraded my speakers from Mission 702s to M74s and Im very impressed with them. I want to upgrade my amp now from an aging pro-logic Sherwood but dont know what to short list. Set up as its is Sherwood R-525, Mission M74 fronts, M7C2 Centre and 70DS Rears.

The Sherwood has performed well over the years (only paid £99 for it so I cant complain) but it does sound compressed at high volumes and I need to upgrade to dolby digital. Pro-logic 2 and/or 6.1 would be nice but not essential

    Ideas so far

    Denon AVR1602
    Denon AVR1802
    Pioneer VSXD810
    Pioneer VSXD710
    Sony STRDB1070

I love action movies and lissen to Trance, Garage, DnB & chillout so power is always good, any ideas on what would suit me best?

    Cheers guys.

For music non of the above !!
Marantz have a much better reputation when it comes to HiFi.
Can be picked up for similar money.

Do Trance, Garage, DnB & chillout count as music?:D

Seriously though for about £300 you can get a lot of av amp Marantz 5300 & Yamaha 630 are two excellent amps available for less than £350, both have all the toys and they handle music well enough.

Richers are still selling the Marantz SR4200 for £199. A great little amp (I got one from RS). Doesn't do 6.1 (only 5.1) and all the latest toys (ES EX and all that cr*p) but it has DPL II which is fine for most things, esp. if you only have a 5.1 speaker setup. It's pretty decent at music too (as far as AV amps go).

the marantz sr4300 (updated version of the 4200) has 6.1, dpl2. dd ex and dts es, and isn`t half bad with music.
the mission speakers can sound quite bright, so getting an amp that isn`t bright sounding as well is important. i changed my sony amp for this very reason to the marantz and the sound has improved dramatically.

I would recommend checking out the Marantz. The Yamaha is a bit warmer and when used with M74's some of the top-end and clarity of House, Trance, etc is glossed over. Those Missions are bright, but they also have loads of bass (as you know), so a neutral sounding amp will bring out more mid-range when listening to music.

I would go for the Marantz over the Yamaha, as Nobber22 says!

I demoed them both the other day along with the Denon 1803, and went for the Denon, because it is IMO equal to the Marantz on movie sound, for quite a bit less cash. And it looks great too!

If I was more concerned about music playback I would have gone for the Marantz, as I think it had the edge.

Depends how you define Trance, DnB and chillout, some can be good, but some peoples idea of it (especially trance) can be dire.

Anyway, musically, Marantz is the way to go I would have thought
