Amp and Subs question

Hi I just wanted to know if a kenwood 1000w amp (kac-7203) has the ability to power two pioneer 1200w subs? How would one go about setting it up. Reason for asking is because I have that amp and one pioneer (ts-w307d2) 1200w sub but I would like to get another sub in the near future too. Could someone talk me through it, I would be very grateful. Thanks.

the amp is capable of 2x250w RMS @ 2 ohms so you'll have enough power im sure. those subs are are 2 ohm so id connect one to each channel. i hope you arent running that amp bridged because it isnt designed to run bridges with a 2 ohm load unless you've got the sub's voice coils wired in series.

one important thing to remember is to only pay attention to the RMS values. that amp isnt a 1000w rms amp - its a 500w rms amp - and those subs arent 1200w rms either, they are 400w rms and thats an unrealistic figure 90% of the time. my vibe reckon my 12" slr sub is 400w rms / 1200w max like your pioneer. it isnt, i was hearing some pretty major compression powering the sub with two thirds of that. even my 150w rms amp that i had gives that sub a good workout though, it was easily cracking 115db - how loud do i really need it to be anyway? lol.

RMS is the only value that counts for anything :)

James thanks for you reply. Of course RMS is what counts and is what I always look at. I'm sort of a noob at this stuff regarding the ohms etc etc.

My set up is that amp, that sub but the kenwood amp is connected to another amp (I think) which powers my 6x9's. To be honest, two subs would leave me no room in the boot. The pioneer sub has been discontinued for a while too now. TBH I wouldn't mind just one very powerful sub but I don't know what to look for and how it all works inc the wiring, ohms etc. I would really appreciate if you could explain to me what I need to do and what sub would be good for my set up. Thank you. :)

Update

I really need some help here, i have the kenwood kac-7203 1200w (500w rms) amp and one pioneer ts-w307d2 (400rms) but I'm looking to get a second sub too. However, I've seen the pioneer kac-w308d2 has 1,400w but the same rms of 400w. Will this be okay? Or will I need something different? Please could someone point me in the right direction.

Thanks.

hi Y.M.S

500w RMS would be ample for just about anything you'd want to drive. i wouldnt expect a massive difference from a second subwoofer though. the general rule is, 2 subs are 3db louder then 1 sub both subs being equal, and im assuming the 308 isnt that much different to the 307.

the question is, why do you feel you need two? are you finding it isnt loud enough? i had a little 150w rms vibe amp powering my 12" subwoofer initially, and it was LOUD although it did struggle with very low frequency stuff. since changing that amp to one capable of 500w rms @ 2 ohms, it's terrifically loud. I'm talking louder than a night club loud and it really slaps that subwoofer about yet the amp is barely getting warm.... but im digressing. anyway, the point is...(and there is one, trust me lol).....if it's not loud enough, you'd probably get a better result changing the current subwoofer for a 15" than you would buying another sub of similar specs. But, regardless of that, it should still be more than loud enough if you've got that amp wired up in bridged powering the one subwoofer.

Yeh that will be ok to use.. the 'peak power' of 1400watts is what the sub can handle for a burp test. i.e 2 seconds before it might go pop. but we just need look at rms figures, so you will be fine with that pioneer.

Wow lol some of the things you've said here have made my mind boggle! Ye I mean tbh I really feel that I need more bass and thought getting a second sub would do the trick. If you're saying that a 15" sub is the way I should go for better results what sub would you recommend for that amp and would it be a simple straight swap over? Reckon you could provide a link or someting please? Much appreciated.

If you want to go for a 15" subwoofer... the JL audio range are good to look at,im using a 15" JL Audio W0V2 in my home theatre powered by 500watts rms it and very nice!

But if you want to keep to a 12" sized sub go for something that has long throw.. have you looked at the 3002 series of pioneers? or look ahve something bigger like the Orion HCCA! now thats an awesome sub! i own one and have to say the bass is immense!

Cheers mate will take a look at some 15" subs first and see where it goes from there! If I go ahead with a 15" sub will it be a matter of disconnecting current sub and replacing it with the 15"?

Cheers

its that easy yes... obviously you will need a new enclosure ;)
