    Hi all,

Upon set-up of a brand new laptop (Tosh Sat Pro L10) - a slight balls-up occurred when entering user names - and now the Wife's name is the registered user.

I know you can change a computer's 'name' any time - and it's shows my name wherever obvious - but when you go into the computer's detailed info tab - the registered user/owner is not me!!

    How does one change this?

It must be possible - as otherwise what happens when you sell a machine on?

Do Toshiba have to get involved or something?

    All help welcome, as ever.

do you really need to do this?

it's not too hard, but involves making changes to the windows registry, which can be a bit intimidating...and is not recommended for 'beginners' ( no offence intended there)

If you really want to change this I can certainly help automate things, but I wouldn't bother TBH... unless it's really bugging you.

    Hi The Dude!

Well - I'm the kind of person who would replace a 'temporary' petrol filler cap with the 'proper' one - even though it'll cost money - and make absolutely no difference in terms of functionality!

So my decision would therefore swing on how much of a hassle it would be for you - to show me the way forward. :suicide:

Plus - I'm gonna have to dare venture into the Terra Incognita of the registry - as not being scared of this realm is an essential first-step toward managing it and keeping it clutter-free (with guidance, of course).

So - if you don't mind, and if it's not major aggro on your part - it'd be appreciated!

first, you need to run regedit.exe

    Start > Run > Regedit >OK

Then, browse down to the relevant area of the registry tree in the left hand pane...

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows NT\ CurrentVersion
    .

    Then change the values of
    RegisteredOrganization, RegisteredOwner, or ProductId,
just double-click on them to edit.

    BE CAREFUL though... :)

    Found this on the net:

    1. Click Start
    2. Click Run
    3. Type regedit in the textbox and click OK.
    4. Regedit should load. Browse to this registry key:

    HKEY LOCAL MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

    5. In the right panel, double click RegisteredOwner
    6. In the value data field, change the name to whatever you wish
    7. Click OK
    8. In the right panel, double click RegisteredOrganization
    9. In the value data field, change the name to whatever you wish. You may also delete this text and just leave this field blank.
    10. Exit regedit and log off or reboot

I have checked this against my XP machine and its valid.

    Edit: too late :)

    Hey that's awesome dudes!!

That 'small' thing was really bugging me!

I'm at work at the mo - but will do that - and will tread carefully, like a time-traveller wary of stepping off the path and creating a space-time ripple...!

    Thanks!
