i am now on my third 37pf9986 and this one is almost perfect apart from the ambilight buzz which can be heard from 3 metres away ,i have tried reducing the intensity

i have access to a "spare" 9986 and wondered if there was a way of sorting this out my self , are the ambilights florescent tubes that can be changed or is the noise from a transformer and not the tubes

the noise is inaudible when i have my denon going or a noisy program but during a quiet moment is very clear and seem to be only the white lights not the colours.

The noise is from the switchmode powesupply that drives the tubes, I think.
It sounds like magnetostriction noise from a ferrite transformer.
You can try finding the transformer that emits the noise and dampen it a bit with wax or silicone sealant. But it is difficult, as you might guess (or Philips would have solved it).

Have you tried turning the brightness right up?

My Tosh buzzes unless the brightness is set to max.

is that the ambilight intensity/brightness as the screen brightness wont effect the ambilight

No, this noise has got nothing to do with the Ambilight. Turning the screen brightness up full chat stops the noise, but renders the picture too bright to watch!

If the noise isn't too loud, you'll get used to it.

if ambilight is off then the set is silent , turn it on and the "tizzing" noise a lot of people have commented can be heard

    its not a contrast/brightness noise

when watching loud movie action etc then you cant hear it ,but as soon as it all quietens down for the dialogue you can hear it in the background.

green and blues are very quiet but as soon as the whites come up its def louder

my last two sets were very ambilight silent but had other probs

    TADTS

mine has a faint buzz with the Ambilight on, I think it's a small price to pay for such a brilliant feature.

My Ambilight makes a very quiet noise, but you're the first person to complain that the Ambilight is noisier than the Backlight....Have you tried turning it down a wee bit?

yep , tried varying intensity levels but makes no difference , only a difference in colour makes the difference

dont get me wrong i dont have sit with ear defenders on and during normal daytime watching (loud) you cant hear it , but at night (outdoors very quiet) during quiet moments in the film you can hear it

my two other sets you had to put your head next to the set to hear it , but this on can be heard 3-4 metres away
