This should be an easy question for someone who knows his stuff.
I have a fairly bog standard DVD home cinema system a Panasonic SA-DM3.
The thing is, I don't know if its working correctly. As I understand it most DVD's are presented in DTS. I have icons on the front of the player that light up when the disc comes on. One for surround, one for pro-logic and one for DTS. Both the others light up but never has the DTS icon lit.

How do I know if my player is playing the movies in DTS????

You're wrong I'm afraid as only about 20% to 25% of films have a DTS soundtrack as well as Dolby Digital.

Most films with both formats will probably default to Dolby Digital anyway so you will have to manually select DTS in the film menu but look for the DTS logo on the case

Are you playing any discs with a DTS soundtrack on it in the 1st place?

I wouldn't assume ALL DVD's include a DTS soundtrack if I were you...

    Thanks for the reply.
I have a few movies with the DTS logo and have tried them. I have searched through the player menus but have'nt found any way of manually selecting the DTS option, I think the player must detect it automatically but still nothing. How can I tell?? Is it perhaps the icon is just not illuminating?? What is the difference in sound i should hear?? Don't get me wrong sounds fab just now but you know what its like. If it can be better then I'll play around with it all day.

Some discs will let you choose the soundtrack by pressing the Audio button on your remote but others will only let you choose the soundtrack by selecting the setup or options menu in the main menu of the disc itself.

Try looking in the 'Spoken Languages' in the Discs menu.

All discs will default to Dolby Digital so DTS has to be manually selected in the film setup menu. This is normally in "options" "languages" or "sound formats"

Whether DTS is better than Dolby Digital is one of the perennial arguments on the forum. In general it is slightly better but not significantly so and in a few cases it is a great deal better but also in some cases it is considerably worse.
