    HI All,

I've been thinking of getting one of the Pace hard disk boxes, but following the threads in here, I am loath to buy one now. I've seen them instores at £299, but I don't want to spend that much and have all of the issues talked about in here.

I dimly recall mention, way back when the twin first arrived, of other manufacturers producing Hard Disk Recorders with digital tuners.

    Did these ever appear?

    cheers all

None yet but a DMRE50 and a TUCT20 will work well but not as well as a twin. They may have sorted the softness know try asking iwatkins.

Cheers - I've been reading about the other problems with channels freezing, recordings not happening, etc. Maybe I'll wait to see what the next software download does....

I am hoping that the Fusion FVRT100 is a major advance on the Pace Twin and should launch with a full 7 day EPG, rumoured to be around £250.
There is also a version planned which has an integrated DVD recorder.
Humax and Nokia both have integrated HD/DTT boxes planned for the UK although pinning down a launch date is difficult.

From what I can tell Pace seem to have resolved the picture quality problem with the Twin, and software upgrades over the summer have resolved some of the reliability problems. I think I might get a Twin in a month or two when (hopefully) the majority of glitches will be resolved.

The Humax and Fusion units seem to be vapourware at the moment, and who's to say they also won't be affected by v1.0 faults that bedevilled the Twin?

    Regards

    Rob

I might just end up getting a twin...does anyone know if each software update contains all of the previous ones?

try www.digitaldirectuk.com for the pace twin at £219.99+7.99 delivery. Download the latest software on the 13th of October 2003 to resolve the final issues with the unit, add a 60gig 2.5" hard drive for £80.00 and what do you have

A top of the range freeview receiver & recorder that even when the fusion does finally get off the ground won't be as good.

I would buy one while they are on offer at Digital Direct the new pace is going to be out till April 2004

All we need is freeview to sort their channel & 7 day EPG act out!

ahh...so the reason the Pace doesn't have an EPG is to do with Freeview, not the unit itself...?

I'd be wary of adding a new disk myself, things blow up around me!! Unless it really was a slot in/out deal....

For some short sighted reason the companies involved in Freeview (BBC, CC and SKY) did not see fit to force/encourage a 7 day EPG which has been common on other digital platfroms. Recently the DTG (Digital TV Group) have created a spec for UK DTT which all manufacturers should support but lacks once again the need to support an decent EPG.
However there are plans to introduce a 7 day EPG in the new year but will only be accessible from STB's that support that feature.

The various manufacturers could at any time provide this themselves and so far only Fusion have said that is what they want to do and they bought some capacity from CrownCastle to carry the data required to feed their own boxes and others that by the technology. Of course until it launches it can not claim to be any better than the long awaited Freeview variant.

Is there a straightforward place to check if a particular box can cope with the 7 day EPG if/when it is launched?

I don't want to buy a box and then find it can't use the new EPG.

Keep an eye on these sites although I doubt many manufacturers would say their hardware is compliant with as yet to be ratified specification.....

What I like about the Fusion is its apparent ability to fast forward live TV. This is a very interesting concept... great for lottery results.

Thanks for the post Jay...naively speaking, it looks like it will give the Pace twin a run for it's money, esp with a 40gb hard drive for that price. I'll hold off until I see some review tho, maybe I'll go leaf thru some of the What Video mags in WHSmiths at lunchtime...

    cheers

No problem, I actually contacted Fusion about there EPG after a lot of comments on some forums about it being a waste of time what with a "standard" 7 day EPG on its way.

I had a good response from a director stating that they decided to produce there own when it became apparent that the standard EPG wouldn't be released until quarter three next year (I guess they'd know after all).

Makes the Fusion even more appealing when it has a few things over all the alternatives.

If the Fusion does work, Pace will have to put any Twins they have in the remainder Bin.
Question is does the Fusion software cope with all the problems and conflicts that have Pace have had.
If it does I will be getting one for sure, especially if the generic 7 day EPG is still a year off. I thought it was scheduled for early next year.

    Regards Richard

Only time will tell I guess, I can only go on what they've said but they admitted it was a rather costly option (to rent the bandwidth themselves to run an EPG) but they felt it was worth it to be the first/only people offering it for 12 months.

Quarter three next year? Where did they get that from?? The latest I've heard is that the Freeview EPG should be going online in January....that may slip by a month or two but I can't see the BBC saying January and then for it to happen in July!

That's what Fusion are saying ... I guess they'd know more than we do as they get all the inside news but I did say "only time will tell".

Having the edge over the other boxes in the run up to Christmas may be good enough to make them a big seller anyway despite the standard EPG coming out sooner than they think.

If you want a true PVR... get a TiVo :smashin:

This will work with any Freeview STB, cable box, Sky, Sky+ or terrestrial, and gives unrivalled flexibility and functionality from it's 20-day EPG.

You can search for programmes by Actor, Director, Genre, Keyword etc., set up "Wishlists" and true "Season Passes" (unlike Sky+'s pathetic series link) for ANY series on ANY channel, pause Live TV, etc. etc.

The hard drive is easily upgradeable to 2x120gb with no software mods, and even bigger if you don't mind getting down & dirty with Linux kernel patches!

There's also a lively and supportive user community forum - and if you opt for the "lifetime" subscription, no monthly sub to pay.

Unfortunately there is not currently a UK manufacturer of TiVo boxes, so you'll have to get one from eBay - but hey, you might pick up a bargain!!

    TIVO doesn't need to -

It wipes the floor in comparison to other products in every other respect:

    Reliability
    Ease of Use
    Upgrading
    Compatibility
    Software
    Support

At the end of the day, Pic quality is only ONE aspect of the story.

How many SVHS vcrs were sold in comparison to VHS? - an indication that pic quality wasn't of ultimate importance to the consumer.
