    HI,

I don't think this has ever been asked before, and when I thought about it, I thought it best to post on here.

Okay, so everyone knows about Region 1, 2, 3 and 4 DVD's, and have heard of Regions 5 and 6, but do any of you actually own any Region 5 or 6 DVD's?

If so, can you tell me what titles you own, why you chose that specific region, and where you bought it?

This is purely a curiosity question.

    Thanks, in advance.

i know there are specific regions for cruise ships and another I think for airlines, I would love to get my hands on one of these for pure curio value. There is also a region which is reserved for future use.

If you get the airline version of The Mummy it has most of the aeroplane chase edited, especially the crash!!!

I only know that from the directors commentary!!

    Hi Again,

As far as I know, Region 7 is the one that is designated for either "Future Use" or for cruise ships, airplanes, et al.

can't find it but there's a very similar thread around, which had a list of the where the various regions apply.

I think it said 9 is reserved while 7 and 8 were airline and cruise line regions

    Hi,

    So, bearing in mind that...

Region 5 = Eastern Europe (Former Soviet Union), Indian subcontinent, Africa, North Korea, and Mongolia

    Region 6 = China

... have anyof you bought DVD's from either of these regions? If yes, what titles? Where did you buy the title(s) from, and what made you choose these regions, over or above an R1, R2 or R4 release?

There are lots of DVD players in Africa m8 its a big place ;) the reason we dont buy films from there is the same reason the yanks dont buy R2 discs !!! they dont want to have to wait longer just so they can get an inferior more expensive copy of a movie they could have gone to Virgin US to buy > Do you really want to watch a movie dubbed in indian ??? months after it already came out here ????

Actually they do. There are some superior R2 releases.

One example is Eyes Wide Shut. The R1 has extra monks superimposed in the orgy scenes to hide the naked people. The R2 doesn't (R4 doesn't either). Who says UK R2s get all the censorship? ;)

Another example. R2 of Windtalkers has more extras than R1. So does the R4.

    There are many other examples.

The real reason we don't buy films from the other regions is because:

    1. It's hard to compare them to R1, 2 and 4 (R3s are hard enough to find info on, let alone the other regions!)
    2. It's hard to find a reliable and cheap retailer that sells these disks.
    3. It's hard to find a reliable and cheap retailer that sells these disks on the web.
    4. It's hard to find a reliable and cheap retailer that sells these disks on the web and uses English for their website.

here's another example of R2 being better than R1: Dark City: the french R2 has DTS.
