This new semi-autobiographical sitcom (pilot) from Sophie Willan aired last night and I was expecting something rather miserable and unfunny but found it to be one of the best new shows that I've watched in a long time. Will hopefully get a full series!
After a recent break-up, Alma tries to get her life back on track. But with no job, no qualifications and a rebellious streak a mile wide, it is not going to be easy. Meanwhile, her heroin-addicted mum has been sectioned for arson, and her vampish grandma Joan wants nothing to do with it.

A bitingly funny and unflinching take on class, sexuality, mental health and substance abuse, celebrating women dealing with the hand they were dealt while doggedly pursing their dreams.
Alma’s Not Normal (BBC Two) is written by and stars the comedian Sophie Willan. It’s based on her award-winning 2017 Edinburgh show, Branded, which drew on her chaotic childhood (some of it spent in care) as the daughter of a heroin addict and her experiences in later life as a sex worker. What was a primarily a laughter-seeking standup set has now been bulked out with a fine cast, an array of swiftly and surely drawn characters and an emotional undertow that – when the time is right – suddenly surfaces to punch you in the solar plexus and leave you breathless with sorrow.
