Personally speaking I hated this movie, bored me silly, I felt nothing for the guy and spent most of the film just hoping he'd peg it and we could spend the rest of the runtime looking at the beautiful ocean shots (which were very good).

I also spotted a few errors with it at the time but I'll be damned if I remember them now (something about certain non-floating equipment being lost and found again).

I get the point about his facial expressions doing all the acting but the guy was a little to calm for my liking.

Never been a Redford fan though so that may have tainted my view of the film somewhat

finally saw this yesterday - didn't come to local cinema and I can't play region locked titles, so have been waiting... Thought it was excellent, well made, shot and acted.. such a shame its so overlooked, got really good reviews, but was hardly marketed at all.

Have to agree with ODB, Dull as dish water, A hole in he's boat, No radio, Sending out an SOS, A storm coming, But sits down and has a read, And takes time to have a shave, I'm laying in bed writhing this, With nothing but my coffee going cold to worry about, And I still can't be bothered to have a shave when I get up.
I honestly don't know what happened in the end as I fell asleep, And even that I got half way through it, I don't care, And have no desire to know.

What you've said is very misleading, none of what you stated is an accurate description of what happened, but to correct your mistakes would only further trawl this into spoiler territory and do the film yet more injustice.

I can appreciate it not being to everybody's tastes but to incorrectly comment on a film you were clearly not paying attention to and didn't even both finishing, potentially to the detriment of the viewing pleasure of others, is a little churlish.

The marketing was clearly a huge problem, so much so that Redford himself spoke out about it when discussing the fact that it went overlooked by the Academy.

The same would have happened to Gravity if it hadn't been marketed right, and since the two are so comparable it's just a shame this one didn't get anywhere near the same publicity or awards recognition, and barely appeared in cinemas. I was gutted that I didn't get the chance to see this on the Big Screen, and it was not for want of trying!

Please tell me these reviews are a joke
I have watched a lot of movies
And am always drawn to survival stuff
This has got to be the most boring movie ever
He says about one word the whole movie
      And just gives up
I read a book called seventy six days at sea about a ugh survived 76days on a lifeboat and that was more exciting than this

Of course you are entitled to that opinion, but the reviews are correct, many people liked this film. I possibly think its even better than Gravity..

Seems this one is another Oblivion, people either love it or hate it. Me I thought it was great and just shows (like Nebraska) you don't need massive SFX set pieces to make a great film.

      8.5/10 from me.

I don't start off watching a film with the intention of not paying attention, It's the Director and the films responsibility to keep my attention, And on this occasion it failed miserably.
And as much as it may grate you, My description is pretty bang on, What's worse, He wasn't even a quarter of the way to a 5 0'clock Shadow.

And I just watched the end, Please tell me he didn't do what he did to get attention, Lucky he never had a can of petrol.

Seriously, what's with all the spoilers today? Do people assume it's somehow ok to spoil the end of a movie for those who haven't seen it, just because they themselves didn't enjoy the movie??

Your summary is also woefully inaccurate. It's a highly misleading description of what happens in the movie.

^ He probably prefers films like 8 Mile. Oh, and thanks for the spoilers, glub. It's pretty hard to spoil a film that's literally just a man and a boat, but you've managed it. Well done.

I'm looking forward to seeing this one, even though I suspect I'll only watch it once.

      Why do people like it?
It is just him on a boat

I personally would not call it a spoiler more like a warning.
If you really think i spoiled it with two sentences. Then why on earth would you want to watch that? go watch cast away
      or naked and marooned
      or even
      Life of pie!

well considering my profile picture is Eminem I think it goes without saying I like 8 mile!
and smabu Your description of it makes it sound exhilarating " that's literally just a man and a boat"

I watched this film not knowing anything at all about it before seeing it. At first I wondered "Ok, let's see where this goes". Then gradually, bit by bit, I found myself being drawn in to such a degree that time lost all significance, and only survival took priority. Trying to predict any type of ending was also a pointless excercise. An incredibly moving film, and a testament to Robert Redford who IMHO is one of only very few actors who could even have begun to pull this off with total credibility.
It's also worth noting that this film is set in the Indian Ocean where flight 370 Malaysia Airlines tragically disappeared.
If films like this and Gravity are going to usher in a new era in Hollywood filmmaking, then all I can say is, "It's about bloody time too!", to save us from the majority of total dross being currently circulated.
I can understand why it's not to everyone's taste though, no bullets or bombs or high tech gadgets or superpowers or car chases or scantily dressed women or worthless spin offs and sequels............
This to me is filmmaking at its purest and finest. Bravo!

A nice personal and well presented opinion of a film ruined by trying to be a smart arse fool at the end. Personally I thought it was boring. It didnt require any of those things mentioned for me to enjoy it just as a lot of the films I like dont have those in but to say you must only dislike it because of that is a bit much dont you think?

As you've mentioned it I thought Gravity was a brilliant film and I was riveted all the way through. I loved Cast Away too (ok different to this film but makes me think of it) and that again had none of those elements. As much as I like a brainless bloke flick from time to time I'd prefer something that pulls me in for other reasons than guns and boobs so your cheap point scoring is just that frankly.

I dont see why having a different opinion of a film is such a crime that ridiculous comments like that require likes as show of support. Opinion isnt fact after all. Some films you like, some you dont but its personal taste at the end of the day

My reference to bombs, bullets etc, was more to highlight that this is what Hollywood generally seems to churn out nowadays to try and put bums on seats. My point was that this film proves its not necessary to have these things to produce a truly wonderful film, and wasn't intended to say that without this people wouldn't like it. But I'm sure that to some that would be the case.
Films on the whole are generally unimaginative nowadays, and tend to resort to effects such as those to create interest. I think you only have to look at the remakes coming out to see that on the whole film studios are running out of ideas.
Personally, I do enjoy a good action film, with good special effects. Inception springs to mind here. My collection of films has some great ones, from Bullet to Batman. Not the earlier Batman films though!
However, All is Lost was ground breaking, and it's good to see that film studios haven't lost the nerve to create films such as this which are very emotive, and venture into areas that other films couldn't, or wouldn't go.
Maybe having been in a real situation where your life has actually been on the line, was the reason I found myself being able to better relate to the situation portrayed.
You've taken umbridge over misconception of what I wrote unfortunately.
