I thought was stunning visually in Imax 3d

my copy arrived yesterday and will get a spin very shortly and I am sure it will look great

unusually this comes with 3D disc as well which some reviews have indicated as being preferable to the 4k - I look forward to trying that one as well - good effort on giving more for the standard 4k cost of the disc - wish that happened more often

my recollection was that I enjoyed the film more than a 7 as well

I think the majority of us are quite limited now in the 3D realm, having adopted 4K, so it's unlikely we'll be able to do a separate 3D review. I'll see whether any of the staff can contribute something to the video section of this review in that department.

And yes, Simon's 4K Doors review will be up shortly.

I do get that 3D is a limited market now but for those of us with a 3D projector and a 100"+ screen this movie may well look better than 4K

just wish more movies shot in 3D gave you this choice - off the top of my head I only have the second bladerunner and valerian with both formats included at no extra cost

I watched this the other day on iTunes (4K Dolby Vision & Atmos).
Really enjoyed the movie and looking forward to a sequel. :)

I was looking majorly forward to this (even avoided watching it on the plane 4 times during my summer holiday flights to HK and back), and while it looks and sounds great in 4k, and I am a big Manga/Anime/Sci-Fi/Action movie fan, it was pretty dire.

I've had *cough*access*cough* to this film for a couple of weeks but only watched it last week. I think I have the streaming version and not the disc. Another reviewer I listen to has a 120" screen and an 11.2 audio setup. So he tends to see and hear the blemishes a lot more than most and his review reflected my view. Cas's review makes me think that maybe there is a little more to see when I get the disc especially as I have a normal sized TV. The audio is probably the same.

I liked the story and didn't mind the romance. The first half is the better film, the second half is the fun stuff. Kind of like the Matrix vs Matrix Reloaded.

7/10 could go to 8 if with the disc.

This and Godzilla: King of the Monsters kinda suffer from the same problem IMO. Which... is an odd thing to claim now I see it written down but hear me out. Both are really good versions of what they're trying to be. Godzilla is a damn near perfect hollywood version of a what is commonly seen as the traditional godzilla film. Alita is a great movie-length version of an anime / manga series. They both keep a lot of the quirks of those particular targets and both deliver on their goals.

The problem is... neither really sort out the inherent problems with the style they're trying to achieve. In Godzilla's case it was a lack of any compelling story or characters beyond the monsters. For Alita there's simply *way* too much story going on! The romance element is probably the worst and there's no more obvious example than the 'giving you my heart' scene. I can see where they're coming from and the visual is lovely (if a little ewwww) but boy is it not earned at that point in the story. It almost ends up as an anthology rather than one cohesive movie which is a huge shame as the potential is obvious. While it's a real pity it didn't find a wider audience I can't say I'm surprised, there just isn't enough here to pull in someone who doesn't at least have a passing interest in the genre or general themes of the film (a problem shared by King of the Monsters).

Still, looking forward to giving this a whirl on 4K as when Alita hits its marks it does so at a really high level. Just a shame it wasn't a bit more focused with some of the more questionable plot threads cut altogether to leave more time for the rest to breathe.

Saw the film at the pictures and really enjoyed it with the wife and friends. Hated how it finished leaving you waiting for the second instalment, but that's always part of the enjoyment making you want more (at least sometimes).

Whilst looking for the release of the second instalment, I was surprised to find out it had been quite a Hollywood flop and that the second instalment might never happen. I'm hoping this isn't another Golden Compass (another film me and the missus really enjoyed) as everyone who we went to watch Alita with thought it was a great film.

I'm just glad I don't read many reviews as they always give you a misconception as to what good and bad. It might not be for everyone, but I cannot wait to watch it again and once I've nipped to the shops tomorrow, it'll be in my collect as I didn't know it had even been released :D

Not getting the love for the Tron Legacy sound mix. I thought it was fairly average :(

The film score of 7 is about right, not sure what i make of this just too much story crammed into 2hrs. A sequel will not get made which makes the movie pointless. The Avatar sequels who cares about them? i predict these will be the biggest Hollywood bombs ever. I was a big fan of James Cameron but unfortunately after watching Avatar not interested.

its been too long for the avatar sequels but I will have a small wager that the first sequel will not be a Hollywood bomb - even though it wont do $2.7 billion at the box office no doubt

      Thanks for the review Cas.

Went with a mate to see this at the cinema and came away from it pretty happy with what we saw. It's probably been well over a decade since we saw the original anime and neither of us could remember the story that well. Still, I really hope that this does get the second (and possibly third) installment. Would happily watch a followup at the cinema again and definitely looking forward to seeing this one on my home setup.

Interesting about the sound quality, as I've heard many in the US thinking it was lacklustre.

Received my copy yesterday, started putting the discs onto my DAS and will be splicing the 4K Atmos soundtrack to the 3D copy. Denying customers the Atmos goodness on the 3D version is so annoying but thankfully now I’m free from discs and studios locking features to certain versions, might get a display case for the cases though .

Strange it has Dolby Vision, but no mention on back cover or the actual disc, says HDR10+ thou, is that not unusual, as all my other Dolby Vision films say it on back cover.

For those of you with LG OLED isn't HDR 10+ superfluous? Just a thought.

I loved the anime back in the 90s. Such a beautiful looking show too. Can't say I'm too fussed over another westernised Hollywood live action re-do, I just don't see the point.

Anyone who is into this should read the manga. It's great and goes into far more depth than the anime.

Cheers for the timely review, Cas. As per, you have some decent referents that now having seen the film, fit well.
Overall I rather liked this and was prepared to look beyond some clunky story choices for the lovelorn teen market.
The city below with it's dank and dirty underworld is impressively drawn out and it all blends into CG territory pretty seamlessly.
The soundscape is full blooded too with effects floating one moment and then clattering you the next.
I never thought I'd say it, but I'm looking forward to more and am rather taken with the Alita character and a fitting none ending...

A solid sci-fi effort, much better than the GITS movie, but it leaves you thinking that the last third of the movie has been cut or they have split the movie in two chapters.Yes,fingers crossed the sequel gets made.

From what i have read about the manga,it is too out there, but there is a lot that can be used as a backbone for a trilogy.

What is on the horizon in big-budget sci-fi(not SW) land?I can think only of Dune, which is at least fifteen months away.
