Yeah I had a look at the so-called "Trailer" a few weeks ago.

I guess I will end up going to see it, not sure how it'll turn out - doesn't really belong to either franchise does it.

They should write a script and then make a movie and worry about the rating later, trouble with this film is theyre worrying about how to get that PG-13 rating and not concerned enough about the fact that this type of film and the fan base it has deserves a good hard edged R rating or 18cert over here.

I totally agree......Eg..release the finished product with all the things that make it a gory classic @ an 18/R rating which would appeal to all die hard fans of this genre but also release a heavily edited version for all the lil kids etc (in a perfect world i know)..... Id put up with pg-13 rating @ the cinema to claw all their money back but 18 or at least 15 for the dvd.
Has this been done in the past?

I posted details about this a while back - from the featurette it sounds quite good. Also good to know Lance Henriksen's returning as the creator of Bishop - he leads the research team to find the aliens/ predators.
old thread With links for downloading the trailer and featurette.

I especially liked the trailer ending, with the Predator ship entering Earth orbit. Made it feel like the original Predator films.
Then I found out this bit was lifted straight from the original Predator film.

So far the storyline sounds like it could work.

I don't understand how it's possible to make such a movie worthwhile and rate it PG-13...

I guess the studios are hoping mindless 'horror loving' kids will flock in their millions to see it.

Odds on it will be devoid of any depth, quality and substance.

MTV style, lightning edited mind rot, for the couch potatoes of the US.

where did it the PG-13 rating info come from? I don't remember anything from the trailer or featurette mentioning this

I don't think there is any need either, both films have a big enough following to ensure big profits with a R / 18 rating.

Where are people getting the idea from that the film will be a PG-13 or 12A, I believe the trailer in the UK had 12A rating but that is only for the trailer, I remember seeing a trailer for T2 along time ago and I was only 5 or 6 years old and im pretty sure I wasent seeing an 18 rated film, the amount of violence that both the Alien and Predator produce could never warrent a 12A, im predicting a 15 at leadt maybe an 18

Sorry mate, the studio have got a the director under contract to bring the movie in at a PG-13 rating.

It's got nothing to do with the trailer. It's a publicly known fact.

Its the same director who directed Resident Evil isnt it ?

I heard theres a directors cut of the above film that will be issued in the near future but anyways i hope although he's contracted to do a PG-13 that he shoots for an R rating and reinstates footage in a special edition.

Ohhhhh and if they do that i hope they tell us in advance when the DVD comes out so i can wait for the R rated edition, don't wanna buy 2 versions of a film i'm still waiting for Daredevil the directors cut to arrive thatll be next April.

Yes - he also did Soldier (possibly the worst film ever made), Mortal Kombat and Event Horizon.

Paul Anderson (directing) really wanted to do the flick and pushed Fox to let him.
It's based on the game rather than any previous Alien or Predator movie 'arc'.
Fox insisted on it being a PG-13 purely for the money and have, as far as I'm concerned, set the disasterous course from the start.
And Paul Anderson has a reputation for making mostly bad movies so I have pretty much written off this project before it's started.
I liked Soldier though it was very average. But Resident Evil, Event Horizon and Mortal Kombat are all awful.
The only way for me to go, now is up if the movie is unexpectedly good. But I doubt that will happen.

    Like i said before,
If they take this route then most will be happy...........predator/alien/aliens have decent plot and have a more serious atmosphere to them....predator2 (even though i enjoyed it) alien3, alien resurrection have much more of a comedy aspect to them which i disliked to be honest.
Unfortunately I fear the worst for avp @ a pg-13 if that is the case!!

I realise I am clutching at straws here but after my original sulk over the PG 13 news it does not necessarily mean AVP will be crap.

A PG-13 will probably mean a 15 certificate here. It does seem in recent years certification boards are far more generous with what they will allow in PG-13 / 15 films.

What tends to make films R / 18 are

    Strong sex scenes
    strong sexual swearing
    Extreme violence

The obvious one of those that may be a problem is the last

    But ...

Alien the directors cut was a 15

Terminator 3 was R rated in America but 12A over here but i thought it was very watered down the violence was tame compared to 2 and if Predator vs Aliens goes for lots of action and sci fi it might just work.

I was somehow deluding myself that they would be stricter here than in the US. Clearly not

How can they possibly make this film less offensive than Terminator 3. IMDB claims it was awarded the R Rating because of strong sci-fi violence and action (and for language and brief nudity)

This is awful news. The only possible way we will see Alien 5 is if this is a success. How can it be a success with a PG-13 rating?

If somehow it is, then if they do make Alien 5 then surely they will think well it worked for AVP ...

Having said all that about the lack of blood and gore in AVP, well Alien Resurrection had a TON of blood and gore, and it was complete pants - so maybe there is some hope...
What will be really bad however is if a PG13 (USA) AVP converts to somewhere between a 12a and a 15 in the UK as then they will go and cut it up and make it a 12a! :(

To be honest if you take the bulk of the swearing out of Aliens you could probably get it down to a PG13 .

Look at something like Jaws which was a AA I believe when ti came out which I think equates these days to somewhere between a PG and a 15 ie PG-13.

Raiders of the Lost Ark struck me as being quite violent and edgy at the time for again an AA I think. ( headshots , impalement , rotten corpses , melting nazis)

What was starship troopers when it came out ?/ 15??

I found Event Horizon a bit boring , Soldier is one of the worst films I can think of
. Resident Evil was lame but better than I thought and had some interesting bits.

Paul Anderson is currently boyfriend to Milla Javovovich for which I believe he deserves a round of applause from the hot blooded heteros amongst us.
