Is anyone else having problems with the new Alien Quadrilogy discs? My brand new Denon 2900 keeps freezing at branching points. I've tried two different sets now, with Alien Res being the main culprit, with both copies locking up regularly. On Alien, the first copy did the same thing, but the second seems to be behaving.

No problems with mine (on Pio 757), although AR is the only one I haven't watched yet.
Some machines do have problems with branching, I can't believe yours is one of them though.

Well as for the problem you are having its exactly the same that happens with the region 2 versions of the film when played on a modified Denon 2900 (not sure if it causes problems on a non-mod player).

Would imagine that most people who have the same problem will be Denon owners although the discs do cause similar problems to other makes, just not as common though. Have been in touch with a couple of people who own the 2900 and Alien Quad who have the same problems at branching points.

These mainly occur (R2) when playing the discs with the dts tracks, which from the main culprets as you stated are Alien & Alien Res both of which are the dts discs. They will play without freezing if played using the dolby digital track.
However this does seem to cause sound drop outs.....weird. And more than very annoying.

Let us know how you get on.

I expressed my corncerns about this before the R2 set was released, some dvd players just dont like dvds that use Seamless Branching, I did try to start a topic about which players were having trouble with seamless branching but only reply was "get a better player" which wasent very helpfull, might be a good idea to list all players that have played the 4 Aliens discs perfectly.

I have a Pioneer 454. So far it has played the "extended" versions of Aliens and Alien3 without any issues.

Plays OK on Sony ES 9000. Good deck, but a few years old now. I bet it'll play fine on all the £ 100 or less budget decks.

I've just got my alien Quad box set r1 and I'm having problems with the first disc. I am watching the theatrical version of alien and it is pausing every now and again like it does at a layer change. I have a philips 763sa dvd player:( . Ihope the rest of the discs are ok as its very annoying.

    Cheers

The Pioneer 565, that is...eh.. love it. :D

    Thanks for everyone's thoughts.

Latest news - I'm now on box 3 as CDWow reckoned that they had a new batch which they had not (yet) had any returns on so I get the impression they've exchanged quite a few. Unfortunately box 3 has exactly the same problems so it's going back for a full refund and I'm going to live with the Alien Legacy box from a couple of years back until I hear that Fox have sorted the problem out.

In the meantime, I urge anyone with the problems to send their copies back - the more that get sent back the more likely Fox are to take notice: anyone remember the DTS Jurassic Park "problem" that wasn't but was really?

I am sticking with the Legacy boxset. Also, I bet the separate amaray editions suffer from the same problem as they are the same discs.

Is it just the R1 that has the problem or is it both R1 and R2?

Both R1 and R2 disks appear to be affected from what I've been reading on the forums here.

Have people tried their sets on their computer because my mate had trouble with his Alien Quadrilogy and sent it back for a replacement but the new set behaved exactly the same, he then tried them on his computer and they play perfectly.

I am pretty sure it is down to the seamless branching that is being used on the discs, some players cant play them 100% and give skipping/freezing/breakup problems, only way to solve this is to get a new dvd player.

    Hi there

I got this reply from philips after I emailed them.

"Thank you for your recent e-mail.

With regards to your query we can advise that we are unfamiliar with
    the term 'Seamless Branching'.

The DVD763SA should not have any difficulty playing back pre-recorded
DVD's. If the playback jumps and skips, this could be due to unit
    defect.

Please contact the retailer if your unit is still under guarantee. If
not, please contact Philips third party service company Service Care"

    Cheers

    Grant

That could be a problem, if the people making dvd players dont know what Seamless Branching is no wonder their dvd players dont like them lol

Seamless branching isn't anything that needs new technology. I have a Pioneer 626D that's about 4 years old and I've played over 1,600 different discs of all regions on it, with only one problem, and that turned out to be a defective disc.

I have a couple of mates that have Pioneers of various types and have never encountered problems, whereas friends with other brands seem to encounter problems at regular intervals.

Plays all four movies in the Region 1 Quadrilogy without a hiccup, by the way.

The Pioneer 646, 656, 737 and 757 models don't work. They suffer from branching and lip sync problems.

    The 5XX does however.

Seanless Branching is ment to be within the normal dvd standard but I have a feeling some film companies have tried pushing it further than it should and that is why not all players are working 100% with them, same with the Red Dwarf Series 3 Bonus Disc, the BBC have said it should work as it is within the dvd standards but alot of people have had trouble so they are re-authoring Series 3 to include animated and still menus.
