do i buy region 1 or region 2?
They are identical except for packaging and price.
And of course PAL speedup and the fact u can't access the deleted scenes separately on the region 2 version, and i believe there is additional commentary on region 1.
Its helpful to be able to access those deleted scenes if u want to know what has been added to the special editions.
R1 and R2 are not the same - R1 is a bit better for extras fans.

I am aware of all the differences between R1 and R2 except for the commentary you say is missing.
Which one is this?
If you follow the link provided by captaineyecatch you will find the answer...
I did - and there was no mention of a commentary that is on R1 and that is NOT on R2.
As listed by dvd compare
OVERALL : R1 - Region 1 allows you to listen to the audio commentary with either version of the film, but on the Region 2, the tracks are available only on: "Theatrical Release" of "Alien", "Special Edition" of "Aliens", "Theatrical Release" of "Alien 3", and "Theatrical Release" of "Alien: Resurrection". Further more, on the Region 1 discs, you can view an optional "deleted footage" marker, and you´re also able to view the "deleted footage" from the theatrical cut's "Supplements menu". Both of these options are missing from the Region 2 discs. R2 is also missing the "script to screen comparisons". Both cover and menu designs differ slightly between the Region 1 and 2 discs.
got the region 2 version and must say all though the features could be different the box design is much more compact and i hope this design is used again.
Does anyone have a picture/link for the region ONE packaging? I have never seen it and am curious...

And the Japanese get a version of the Quadrilogy next year with less extras but DTS sound on all 4 films.
I would go with the Region 2 release mate, there is no audio commentary missing, its just that you cant select it for the original and special editions of the films but that makes more sense to me, its not like the people in the commentary were watching both the normal and special edition at the same time so chances are what they are talking about in the commentary for the original isnt happening in the special so wouldnt make any sense.
Region One packaging sucks and is very poor. However, I am a completist so bought that version.
I wonder if I can get away with buying a Region 2 copy, switching the discs with my region one and returning it as an unwanted present?
i got r2 in the end, the r1 version seemed to be to big and clumsy in that you would probably have to open the start of the pack up to get to the discs, the r2 is more a book form using a page for each disc
To be honest I prefer the look of the region one - I think I will go for that... Thanks for the help guys
