    Great news from digital bits

"We've got a couple of cool things for you today. First up, the May edition of the UK's Empire magazine has some details on the upcoming Alien Quadrilogy direct from 20th Century Fox. Look for the 9-disc set to include new "extended" cuts of Alien, Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection (Aliens will be the previous director's cut), along with audio commentaries, documentaries and lots more. Each film will get 2-disc treatment (a disc for the film and a disc of extras), along with a 9th bonus disc of just supplementary material (including the Alien Legacy documentary). The film discs will reportedly give you the choice of watching the theatrical version or the new extended cuts via seamless branching. According to Fox, the set is tentatively due for a late 2003 release".

Yayyyyyy so finally it looks like we'll get to see the directors darker vision cut of Alien3 as well as a new extended cut of Alien
i'm chuffed even though i still can't stand Alien Resurrection

David Fincher won't have anything to do with
the extended cut of Alien 3. He has stated in
the past that he has no intention of doing a
director's cut as he is happy with the film as
it is. The extended cut will be re-edited using
    deleted scenes via seamless branching.
He will, however, do a commentry on the
original theatrical version of the film.

I always wondered why they couldn't add the deleted scenes to DVD's using seamless branching and be able to turn them on/off so they are put back in when you are watching the film if you turn them on, rather than viewing them seperately on the extras disc?

Finchers definative version of Alien3 was never finished (lots of cgi was never completed etc) so what ever version is on the new dvds wont be his definative version.

Alien3 was a mess to begin with. Early scenes were shot as the story was meant to be about Monks on a planet not prisioners. This early footage was all dumped and the story re-writen.

What ever the outcome im sure the missing Alien capture scene will be there.

I hope your right. But I did watch an interview that David
Fincher gave about the time that Fight Club was released
and he did state, when asked if he would re-visit Alien 3,
that he was happy with the final edit.
Now, he may have said that due to the fact that he was
promoting another Fox film at the time and didn't want to
draw attention away from it. Only time will tell.
It is a shame though, if what you say is true, that studios
have such powers to re-edit films beyond what the director
intends ( Gangs of New York being a prime example) mainly
to get more showings and therefore generate higher takings.
    The Buck rules!:(
