    Evening All,

Well, in 6 days time, unless Pioneer get cold feet, or pull the plug, then the superb Anime classic "Akira" will be released, as a Limited Tin Edition, or as a regualr double-DVD edition.

Seeing as I was probably one of the first to pre-order this title from DC-DVD, I should be getting it throught the door very, very soon!

Can't wait to see that bike chase in the restored print! Should look and sound superb!

The tin arrived with me last weekend, watched the feature but not the extras. New english dub with massively different dialogue to previous english VHS releases. Pretty good. Japanese track only DD2.0 which is disappointing, but picture looks great (some grain but not excessive).

    The tin looks stunning...

Remarkable for an anime in that it is very well animated: most other anime actually have very little real animation in them , one character talks then freezes then other character talks moves a bit etc.

    Very textured soundtrack too.
Storyline is a bit whacky as always.

All other anime pale in comparisson with Akira if you ask me.

Saw another otomo one a few years ago " Dreams" that wasn't bad but a bit patchy qualitywise. RoujinZ is quite amusing also but yet to see anything approaching the production quality levels set in Akira.

How in hells name did you manage to receive the tin edition so quickly. I have just checked and my tin has not even been shipped from DVD Box Office yet and I ordered it months ago

By the way I read somewhere on the net that Pioneer have pulled the plug on the regular release of Akira and will not be releasing it until later on in the year.

    Mine arrived Monday Morning.
Some stores in the States had it up for sale as far back as Thursday 12 July!

The Regular SE (without metal tin) has been pushed back to 25 September. God knows why!

I get my DVDs from Disc Emporium - they are always early but are not the cheapest. Service is great though...

According to www.dvdfile.com the only difference between the two is the box, so obviously someone just wants to fleece the paying punters by charging more for a metal box :(

Have to say I loved Akira when I saw it upon its initial release and purchased the double video set from a few years back. It was watched loads of times but I started to re-watch it a few months ago and have to say that I think I grew out of it :(

    Carl (and others),

I can't believe some of you have had this for so long now! You lucky buggers!! :D

I know a lot of people don't like the tins, but as a Special Edition, they are certainly worthwhile as colletor's items, and at least look like they are worth more money.

    Pooch,

This is a really nice tin, not with a jewel case inside like the Anchor Bay stuff, but with proper fixed (clear) inserts with Neo-Tokyo artwork behind.

    You will not be disappointed...

Did anyone else get screwed over by BigStar.com on this? I got a mail from them a while ago saying:

and of course, by the time i got this, no-where had the tins left, so i'm stuck with a normal version from play247.

    Where'd you get that from?

The Akira tins are still available with us since further deliveries have now come in since the first, which covered pre-orders only.

    Hi All,

Got my Tin Edition on Monday morning! Certainly an interesting and novel tin, completely unlike anything I have seen. Only minor issue, is the lack of a spine, with the name of the DVD film on it, but otherwise, a worthy set.

Haven't had the chance to watch the movie yet, but have seen it before. The print looks stunning, but disappointed that the Japanese audio track isn't 5.1 or even DTS!!! (Imagine hearing that!)

Extras look pretty good, although I think the documentaries were way too short.

Despite all of this, I still think it's a great set worth owning, and hoepfully everyone will still be able to get it.

Luc - tell "Bigstar.com" to get stuffed next time, and take your orders and custom elsewhere. What they did was totally unfair to you!

One final note: FAO Sandi - you're probably not technically allowed to advertise your company having X title for sale, as it is free advertising, and that's not what this forum is meant for. I don't want to sound like a complete git by saying that, but you could start giving the (accidental) impression that anyone from any DVD firm can all do the same thing, which wouldn't be right or fair. I know you probably didn't mean to openly advocate purcahsing from your firm, but you ought to get Spectre or Blade to explain what is or isn't allowed to be said by DVD company employees, on behalf of their firms.

    Sandi,

No apology necessary, and no offence was taken. Just don't want you to get into trouble over something like this, with the bod's that run this forum.

Sorry for any offense I may have caused. Just trying to let people know what is available (from many region one suppliers) - we are of the understanding that it's Canadian sourced product that is causing problems. We hear through the grapevine that not all suppliers will be gettng these limited tins.

Perhaps this will also apply to the limited editions of Wickerman / Suspiria / Opera / Stuntman, etc from Anchor Bay.

    Kind regards
    Sandi

Pizzaman, ;) have you seen it yet? Thinking of getting the "movie only" release as there seems to be no difference to the SE (except the missing disc with extras of course). Worth getting it? Heard there are a lot of complaints about the dub ...

    Complaints???
Any idea of what in particular people have objected to? Personally I thought the dub was fine.

    Reiner,

I agree with Rambo. The new dub is a lot more accurate and a lot better than the original version ever was.

Admittedly, the film should really be seen in its original language, with subtitles, but at least the alternative stands up pretty well.

Oh, and get the Tin Edition or the Regular Amaray Edition with the 2 DVD's in it, as the extras are definitely worthwhile, and will only cost you about £4-£5 more than the film-only edition.

Rambo, check out the customer reviews at online DVD retailers like www.dvdempire.com, seems a lot of people complain that the new dub differs too much from the old versions and there is some add. speech (someone thinking loud if I understood correctly).
The new dub maybe closer to the original but perhaps people are just not used to it and keep on comparing it to the former translation.

Pooch, I don't mind the extras if they are for free, but won't pay for it if I can avoid it, so luckily in this case the 'movie only' edition is available.
I rarely watch them, have Gladiator, The Abyss and ID4, all 2-disc sets and I never looked at the 2nd disc again (after the first time scanning through).
Nevermind if someone else is after those, but it's just not of my interest - the movie alone does it for me. (No comments about ID4, please! ;) )

I must also admit they I don't like subtitles, so it has to have an English (or German) dub, like e.g. CTHD.

Anyhow, thanks for the advise, will order the DVD now, you convinced me ... :)

Hi All, Has anyone got the extra that runs throughout the whole film in the background and can be seen in all the dark scenes? I'm talking about the Universal Pictures region 2 release of EL CID. It's a copyright caption of a BBC TV programme made in 1993 called 'To Play The King'.<br />I e-mailed Universal twice about the problem and am still awaiting their comments. On the DVD case it states that the audio is DD5.1 but in reality it is 2 channel stereo. I play the film in dolby surround. The original film was in Widescreen at the cinema and has been on tv in widescreen too but for some mysterious reason Universal has transferred it to DVD as good old pan and scan 4x3 ratio. Anyone out there care to comment? <img src="rolleyes.gif" border="0">

    Hi,

Michael, as I don't own this film, I can't tell you if the problem is on all copies of the film, or just your disc itself.

Also, don't mean to sound rude, you being a newbie here, and everything, but you need to make sure that your postings go in the right threads. Yours is a new topic, not related to the AKIRA postings, which it has appeared under. Therefore, if you copy and paste your post, into a POST NEW TOPIC post, then hopefully someone else, may be able to help you out.

    Hi,

Just read in the latest issue of Home Entertainment, (I think), that in their opinion "Akira" is a "pile of old tosh", but gave it 3/5 stars!

Yeah, like that makes sense! So much for needing intelligence to work as a DVD reviewer on a home cinema magazine. <img src="rolleyes.gif" border="0">
