Hi, I have a MacBook, iPad and iPhone and would like to play music from them on my stereo.
Am I right in thinking that I can do this through airplay to an airport express?

If so does it have to be the newer model AE or will it work with the older model (non N)?

Also will the AE add to my existing network (Bt Homehub) to do what I want?

I am a little confused with how this all works so sorry if I am asking silly questions.

Yes the Airport express will be fine. The older model will also do.

During the set up wizard pick the option to join an existing network then join a wireless network.

To do it via the manual settings wireless should be join a network and on internet tab it should be set to bridge (off) mode.

    Correct not needed.

I assume your wireless is operating in multi mode b/g/n so the older AE's can still connect to it.

No don't need the newer model. I use a 2006 AE linked via airplay to stream spotify to my hi fi. Works a treat

I got an old AE today but I'm not sure how to set it up.

I think it is because my airport utility is 6.3.1 which isn't compatible with the older AE.

Anyone know how I can set it up?

Hi - which model of the older Airport Express did you get hold of ? possibilities appear to be :

Original Airport Express ( wifi BG Only ) Model A1084 or A1088
    Airport Express 802.11n ( 1st Generation ) Model A1264
    Airport Express 802.11n ( 2nd Generation ) Model A1392 - The current model

I assume its the first one ( original unit ) as you mentioned no need for N support and assuming your are trying to configure it from your Mac - which version of Mac OS X are you using ?.

Unfortunately Apple have dropped support for some of the older airport units from the more graphical V6 Configurator. If you are running Mountain Lion or earlier on your Mac - you should be able to download the V5.6.1 airport utility from Apple and use that.. If you are running Mavericks you can't by default install the V5.6 Configurator - you either need to setup a pre Mavericks bootable disk to run the V5 Configurator or if you also have a Windows build the Windows V5 Airport Utility should still work...

I prefer the V5 Configurator as you have access to more options than with the more graphical V6 Configurator - so its annoying that Apple have disabled its use on Mavericks... :(

    Hi again..

A little more digging re Mavericks and the older V5.6.1 Configurator and I found this :

    AirPort Utility 5.6.1 on OS X 10.9 Mavericks | Corey J. Mahler

I have just tried it on a Mavericks test system and it appears to work OK...

Obviously use at your own risk - but it seems good to me..

Its given me access to the V5.6.1 Configurator again under Mavericks - which is useful.. :)
