I'd get rid of the cats and give the place a thorough cleaning :D
I'd start with the carpets(shampoo) and work up. No point trying to mask the smell.

I have wondered sometimes that it might not be the cats that smell but i'm not sure where the smell is coming from, i do have a bissell carpet shampooer though. :smashin:

Simon, it's hard to think it can be anything but the cats - you probably largely get used to it when you are in the flat for any length of time, but notice it again when you return. I suspect visitors might notice it even more. I'm no expert on the urinary habits of our feline friends, but I do know that cat pee is fairly potent. Some people recommend baking soda to absorb (adorb??) the smell - either just with an open box in the room or by sprinkling on the carpets. You can also buy specially designed pet odour neutraliser sprays in most supermarkets. Good luck!

You don't have any plants near the door do you?

My mam and dad once threatened the cat with the canal because they thought it was piddling in the corner. Turned out it was a plant they had bought. Can't remember what type it was though.

    Poor cat...

No plants near the front door and the smell is definitely coming from the flat.

Could one of the cats have brought in a dead animal perhaps?

Autosmart Blast Air Freshener. Used by Car Detailers and smells pretty good. Lasts for ages too.

The reed diffusers work well, just pick an aroma that isn't too sickly.
