AE900 Lamp Life

I'm sorry if this has been posted before. I did a pretty thorough search before posting and couldnt find a decent answer.

Panasonic seem to avoid the issue. All they have is a subnote stating 'The length of time that it takes for the lamp to break or fail to illuminate varies greatly depending on individual lamp characterisitics and usage conditions'. How clever of them.

I found 2 sources saying 5000 hours in Eco mode. 1 just said 3000hrs. Can any experts here confirm this? If it's definately 5000 hours, I'm sold.

Also, is 5000hrs common for newer projectors, or was this one of the selling points of the AE700? (and the AE900 if it has the same life).

Links I found to AE900 lamp life on the web :

This one says 3000hrs (in normal mode I assume) -

Lamp life seems like a bag of mixed nuts and bolts, if you pick out the right combination you'll get the expected result.

Some like me get the expected hours out of their lamps others (and plenty of them) experience bulbs going in the hundreds of hours - this is a huge grey area!

If you've seen this PJ in action and like it then go for it, but I no longer regard lamp life as a deciding factor for there is no guarantee - it's all a black & white promise! IMO:rolleyes:

Thanks for the frank reply. I'm starting to realise that bulb life is an inexact science. The most conservative reports indicate 2-3000 hours which sounds at least as good as the majority. Looks like it's gonna be the AE900. I cant wait.

A friend has just got one for a 'house present' and loves it. I've seen it myself and liked it too but have my heart set on a DLP next.

What part of Oz are you in - and how's the humidity?

Brisbane, Qld. In summer it does sometimes get up over 40C (104F i think) and pretty humid. Luckily I have air conditioning so I doubt the pj will ever see those temps.

What DLP are you gonna get.? I've thought about the whole DLP/LCD alot and still cant really put my finger on which is better. It seems like they're both getting closer to each other.

Thinking of a Mitsubishi HC3000.

After 2yrs our LCD PJ started getting mould on the inside lenses, got them cleaned by factory for a very reasonable cost, just be aware of it and catch it as early as possible. If you let it eat the coating on the lens your in for a 'shocking' bill !!

We get about 85% humidity in the wet season and use dehumidifiers around the flat.

BTW, my uncle lives in Bundersberg (that the right spelling?).
