Getting a AE700 soon... so I'm wondering which screen type is best, white or gray ?

Read somewhere that gray is best for LCD projectors - is this correct ?

    I think simply put.

If you use grey as a screen colour over matt white
You will get slightly better blacks at the expense of some screen brightness.

I experimented with greys (via the well known dulux icestorm route) and yes, blacks were less grey, but I could not live with bright films being pulled down a bit, so I stuck to white screen in the end.

    Personal preference I think.

Best would be to get a sheet of white coated hardboard (under a fiver)
and have half white, half grey (icestorm paint of your choice) hold it up in front of your projector and see what you think.
    Total cost under a tenner.
