i NEED a good quality dvd recorder +vcr combi it must have optical out and a good selection of in out sockets, if such a thing exists it would ideally write to both +/- dvd r/rw discs and would also play both, it would need to both record from vhs to dvd and from dvd to vhs. any ideas?

I would advise getting seperates as opposed to a combo unit: a decent VCR (Panasonic/JVC) coupled with your DVDR of choice will produce decent results.

The number of VHS/DVDR combos is currently limited to Panasonic, JVC or Bush. Out of these none record to DVD+RW/+R disks (not that this really matters much). The JVC and Bush record to DVD-RW. All record to the universally compatible DVD-R and the Panasonic/JVC also record to DVD-RAM.
