    Hi,
Going to America next week on a fishing holiday on the St Lawrence River system in New York State.
Taking My Nikon D70 which I have just been getting to grips with.
The type of shots taken will be general landscape shots of the surroundings and river and close up portraits of son with specimen carp (hopefully).
I"m reasonable happy to use aperture mode for the Landscape shots but for the others type mentioned should I stick to auto exposure ?

Background for the portrait shots would be combination of river and bankside( bushes/trees etc )
    Sunny bright conditions expected.
Not taking tripod but would monopod be useful if so any one with a recomendation ?

    TIA

It depends, if you have the time and enjoy it (which a holiday should be about in my book...) then try out the manual modes and take some shots as well in fully automatic and compare the differences at home and learn from what you've been doing...
