I realise that everyday people as the same question…but hey ! one more won’t kill anyone……

I have been looking at a TH42PE30 Viera from my local Pana shop.

    They are offering:
    Telly
    Stand
    DVD writer (DMRE65EBS) plus
    3 Year warranty

    All for £2499 inc

Yes I know it is not HD compatible but that is not an issue as I am moving to Cape Town (South Africa) in 2 months and they are light years away from HD TV.

So, is this a good offer? And am I buying a winner screen that is going to offer me reliability and sound performance.

I look forward to feedback.

    Thanks in advance !

:smashin: I have the exact same panel with stand etc, purchased
    last september for £3,100.oo.

I think your getting a v.good deal personally.

And as for performance i couldn't ask for
    any more.

I get a good picture just using the internal tuner.

If you like the picture you have seen in the shop,
    i would say get it.

    Thanks for the feedback guys,

I was well happy with what i saw in the shop, I have seen loads of screens and I really like the look of this one, not just the picture but the bezel etc....plus the guy in the shop was so helpful. I am in IT sales and can really relate to service levels more than price. :smashin:

I am having a container sent back with all of my furniture (I arrived 3 years ago with a rucksack now I am taking back a fricking container) so the only thing I may have an issue with is the customs man.

Power over there is the same here, just a "round" plug not square. The guy at the Panasonic shop is also going to transfer the 3 year warantey to SA as well !

FYI: Had a guy in form Pickfords to quote for door to door shipment of furniture....can you belive that it would be cheaper to have all the goods sent to Cape Town than if i was moving to Scotland from Devon ! what a fricking joke !

Any chance of getting another screen thrown in that container for a small fee? Palsmas are fiendishly expensive in SA....pio fde (xde not available) is R49,000).

I bought a TH42PE30 last week for £2100 which included the panasonic viera wall bracket. One year warranty (but a second with the nationwide credit card). Sounds like your deal was a fair one.

    Hiya Zulu,
Can you tell me which shop that offer is in? I have been looking for one with free dvd recorder but haven't seen one yet.
I don't really want to buy on-line would prefer to go to an actual shop

    Many thanks

If you are going to SA then definitely no need to wait for the PV500 HD ready model...as you say HDTV is too far into the future.

My suggestion would be to go for the PW7 or PHD7 since these are perfectly able to give excellent TV and DVD viewing....I would choose the HD7 if youu are also thinking of hooking a PC up to it.

By doing this you will save some hard earned cash....perhaps to spend on some fine Cape wines to enjoy whilst watching your plasma.

As for impport duties...I thought they only charged you on "new" goods arther than your "regular household furniture"....I know that was the case when I shipped my stuff from SA here to London. So even if your plasma (and even if you household had two plasmas...nudge nudge wink wink ;) ) was reletively new it would not attract duty.

I actually spoke to av sales and they reckon that the price of the new HD version could be lower as the £2700 is only a guidline at the moment !

The new replacement for the current Viera is the PV50, which I expect to be available for £1700ish (no extras) when in stock.

The PV500 I imagine a £500 premium, for HDMI and most importantly it is a high-resolution screen...it is so much more than just some extra pixels - Panasonic's jewel in the plasma crown.

If you weren't leaving the country in a few weeks, then it would be mad to buy a current Viera even at those 'discounted' prices...

The shop that I am speaking to is based down in Devon, let me have your addy and I will send you their details.

gslater, I will have to look into the import duties, but I as much as i would love to take you a screen back I can't. my mates back home would linch me as they have given me shopping lists as long as my arm.

If you are living here and moved over here what do you want to do with a plasma there? and the two screens you recomend...they are nice, but I really like the look of the viera !

(cape wines....ooooooohhhhhh ! dam I love a good cape wine...is it to earley for a drink?????)

Zulu UK, I have just seen the new TH42PE50 down at Powerhouse, my opinion is that it definitely looks more 'budget' than the TH42PE30 ! They were both roughly the same price but the older model looks aesthetically much much better. If you had your eye on a TH42PE30 and don't need HD compatibility, get one while they are still available ! Hope they don't use the same design for the PV500 HD !

It will interesting to see what other peoples views are.

Good thing we all have different tastes - I saw the same PE50 at Powerhouse and thought it to be a much more refined overall presentation - very sleek - with all the rough edges in design of the previous model (which itself was a good looker) ironed out. Having previously considered a PWD7 with freeview box, I think I will definitely go with the new Viera design - A real design beauty!
